I dont understand tyre sizes (landrover 101 fc)

I need some replacement rubber for the 101. The exiting tyres are perished, and, finally, one has failed today.

The original spec is 9.00 x 16. Cross ply bar grips. Which is what it had on it, 20 years ago, when i purchased it. They were horrible.

I fitted 255/100r16 michelin xzl but these have now failed.


What i dont understand, however, is what equivalents i may be able to fit on the same rims.

Its confusing to me, as the rims are 16" diameter, same as, say, my defender, but i cant fit defender tyres because... (?)

I guess theyre not wide enough, but what part of the "spec" is the width?

Again its an ignorant question, as, in 20 years of ownership, i should have got to the bottom of this before... but i have not!


I really don't need anything wild for it. Some sort of all terrain (rather than mud) would be entirely fine.

The 255 is the width in mm, the next number is the side wall size as a percentage of the width, again in mm, the R means radial and the 16 as you know is the rim diameter.

Its easier to go to 15" rubber, greater choice and a lot cheaper. I had some 12mm ish centres plasma cut and I welded them into some 15" rims from Midland wheels.

It's difficult. There are very, very few tall, narrow tyres for 16 inch narrow rims.

With your current tyre 255/100r16

255 is the width metric in this case
100 is the aspect ratio in percent so in this case should be the same as the width as it’s 100%
16 is the rim size in imperial.

You also need to make sure you have the correct load rating which may be a two or three digit number. On my van the load rating is 103.

9.00 x 16s are equivalent to roughly 230/100R16s. The old imperial measurements were equivalent to 100% profile in new metric.

Basically you're looking for something like a 34" tyre 9" wide. I've not come across many 100% profiles in modern money so as Bob says you may struggle to find something tall enough on a 16" rim.

weller used to do 15 inch 8 spokes off the shelf that fitted land rovers ,,, the off set was a bit funny though , bound to be a few of those about too

Thanks for the explanations.

Where should I go from here? I can get what I have on there currently as part worn MOD stock for about £250 a corner.

Or, very roughly, what sort of money do custom rims cost, in order to make use of more common tyres?

For those that don't know, the 101 is six stud, so no common alternative rims, apart from the previously mentioned unimog rims.

I've been a member of the club, on and off, over the years.

I can't even remember what it was that they "did" a while back, but, at the time, it put me off rejoining.

I'm on that forum though, or was. It may have even been that they were talking of making the forum members (as in paid up club members) only or somthing. Whatever it was it was one of those stupid ideas thought up by people with nothing better to do, and it left a bad taste.
