I think if it’s a good fit on what you’re using to hammer down the middle then grease works ok, it tends to squidge out though if it’s not a foot fit. I thought the bread might try and come back through the rollers but it didn’t.

Worked soft plasticine or soft putty ought to be as good may be even silicone gun sealant at a push .

Pleased it worked.
Except if doing an LS chevy one. Theres a core plug in the crank that you will push out into the sump! I know, but i know a few who didnt.................

Usually to cap off the open end of a main oil supply drilling ...not all cranks & con rods are lubed the same .What the hell is the thinking behind a core plug in the back of the crank
Isn't this usually a solid brass plug though, in oil galleries, not a core plug as such.

I commissioned a robot cell at Ford Dagenham in the 80's that plugged the unwanted oilway drillings in the crankshaft with pop rivets. We had a few robots on the crankshaft line, a gantry robot picked the blanks out of a stillage and loaded the conveyor using an early vision system to orientate them, a couple of robots on the line cleaning drillings using a "bottlebrush" and finally one to rivet the holes and palletise them.
Dear me, that sounds a poor choice, did the pop rivets give any problems?
I hate rivets! Great on the bench but not great for critical applications where you need validation data. (Or not in my experience)

Perhaps work out the force on the item at the maximum pressure, plus a safety margin? What force would you need to apply to a ‘popped” rivet to remove it? I would expect the pop rivets used for that purpose were actually designed for the duty, too - not your usual ebay purchase.
