Being in Cumbria, I've worked with plenty people who work at, or subcontract for, Sellafield and BNFL. I have seen the maintenance works carried out on the intermediate level waste containers with my own eyes.nirex wanted to dump the nuclear waste in the anhydrate mines at billingham that **** was soon stopped in its tracks by residents a bit of crap dumped is nothing compared to dangerous waste that cant be cleaned up or poluted water supply and earthquakes i bet you wouldnt like it if they were fracking around your water supply or house . its just big companys wanting to make a profit then leave a clear up for the taxpayer
I can tell you, there is no such thing as "dumping" nuclear waste, it's simply not allowed to happen. The maintenance and quality assurance levels almost beggar belief. For every dye penetrant inspection, there will be two QA people signing off on it.
Sure, you'll hear of scare stories about Sellafield's rod storage ponds etc... these things aren't actively poisoning anything or anyone, why do you think they've been allowed to get to the state they are?
They're still on about building the repository underneath Cumbria, and I'm all for it. It'll cost a horrendous amount of money, but will create jobs and wealth. If any radiation accidents happen (human factors always a problem) i can't see any way how it could contaminate more than the immediate surroundings.
Nuclear has NEVER been safer.
I'm also all for fracking... being in industry I know how stringent the criteria is for them to sink the wells and cast the casings, how deep they have to go below the ground water, and how low the disturbance levels are. They can frack in my back yard if they want. I'll never feel a thing.
Again, it's NEVER been safer. The industry learned all its lessons from badly-done fracking and well casings in America
Most of this stuff comes down to education of the risks and measures taken to lower these risks to an almost imperceptible level.
But you just stay in your own little paradise and keep dumping your gas bottles where you please
