Knife making.

Thought i would just post a few pictures of a knife in process
Nearly all my knives develop from an idea / specific purpose. Which is developed initially on the drawing board. Then onto card teplate finally a sheet metal template that can remain in the shop
This series of pictures cover the early stages of production of the first high carbon prototype of this design. It wont get sold because of the testing it will go through will render it unfit

This blade is now layed away ready for tge next batch of anealing (which i do in a vermiculite filled hot box). The blade has the bevels forged in previous and it will be worked with file not grinder as i want to go slow and do a lot of looking at shape angles etc.
It might alter some because primary to all else it must work as intended if it does not and cannot then its bsck to the drawing board literally.
However if it does work well for purpose then i can produce it in a range of different metals keeping the first as a finished guide to all things..

Stock removal method not really my thing personally speaking. Have done it but i prefer forging, it gives a certain asthetic and practical benefits but mainly its about the one off uniqueness over a factory buck etc.

Aust- forging and also creating grain that runs concurrent with the shapes. Distil taper and leaving just a hint of the " brut de forge" is where i am at with this. Besides i hate grinding for long periods " forge thin and grind little" should be written above the anvil.

Do any of you knife makers have a water wetted fine sandstone , powered grind stone with fence/ table that you have made yourself ? If so would you pop up a picture or two of how you did it please ?
I've been offered a 70 mm thick 500 x 500 lump of fine sand stone … been thinking I might be able to use it for a water stone

I have one but I didn't make it ! It was given me by a craftsman in his 90s and it was pretty ancient then . Maybe 200 + years old . It's pretty good to use of a little slow . I have used it at shows occasionally but do enjoy just building a knife or two without electricity now and again " just for the crack " forging thin than taking a "swear filter " file to it hot before anealing and putting on The wetstone

Its a medium bushcraft hunter. Something small enough to dress a rabbit at a push a roe buck ideally , big enough to batton through firewood and tough enough to not break in use. But most importantly able to suit the hands of a female or younger / smaller user. I noticed this giving my own knives out to a guides group and watching my own girls holding my larger handled knives
Most bushcraft knivrs are scandi grind, this will carry a full grind for the above use on game s
Not sure on the steel choice yet quite fancy a basic 1080 or another single alloy with a differential temper but i normally mess around testing first and it could end up going for a tool steel..

Oh yes, for many its sit in a box and get loomed at and maybe gather value.. I doubt you might touch a proper Bob loveless for lees than 1k in basic format and condition

I do stock removal and forging depending on what is wanted. Also depends on what type of steel they want. The knife I made for Baldy was made from 14c28n stainless so a bit of a different beast.

One of my personal favourites I have forged is a viking style neck knife. Not sure how to post a picture on here?!

I think the forum has an image size limit so if the file(s) are huge, it won't accept them.
