I did have a crank shaft bolt come loose once on my Series 111 Safari. I was going up the Old Kent Road and heard the most horrible clattering so pulled over to investigate. A very dodgy looking white tipper lorry pulled up for the driver to ask what's up, and in a strong Irish accent when told, invited me to pull into his 'camp' (an about to be demolished Post Office workshop facility with loads of caravans corralled in it!) In no seconds flat he was under the S111 spanner on the pulley nut followed by what seemed to be a brand new Britool torque wrench

Keep it simple, scaff tube on the end of a power bar, and hope its a good quality one! Your landrover looks awfully nice too, I really should buy myself one.

hope you replaced the pulley/balancer while at it , with those grooves in the old one a new seal wont last long ,presuming you did .

@KimB agree with @arther dailey, also if you used a puller around the edge of the crank pulley then replace it as well... A knackered crank pulley (which can be caused by using a puller) will kill the crank in fairly short order. It was that pulley that killed two crankshafts in my 300Tdi because the internal bonding had failed (which is what the pulley can break).

You must make sure you are applying force at a right angle, so you aren't pulling the end of the wrench inward or outward:

If your wrench isn't exactly 12 inches, you can get around that as well. Use the formula:

X = (12 / Y) * Z

Where Y is the length of your wrench in inches, Z is the torque the fastener requires (in ft-lb), X will be the number of pounds to have show on the scale fastened to the end of the wrench. Let's say you needed to tighten your 29 ft-lb nut with a wrench that is only 8 inches long:

X = (12 / 8) * 29
X = (1.5) * 29
X = 43.5

So you would hook your scale to the end of your 8 inch wrench, lift until you see 43.5 lbs show, and at that point, your fastener is tightened to 29 ft-lb.

Yeah I couldn’t do it this way because the gauge was too long to get it in.

you use a piece of plyboard or thick card with degree marks on it kim

fit it where the square is, as it does the same thing

My Vw has started leaking for some reason from the last oil change, what’s especially annoying is it had a new sump washer

Always the way. I’ll just keep sorting things as and when. My turbo oil return feed is leaking. Again I changed the gasket on that bloody thing last time. It’s very annoying.

@KimB I tried fixing a leak on my van, But gave up in the end. Its only a very slight leak, So barely loose any oil. Just top it up
