afternoon all. I know there is a few landy nuts on here so after some advice. I'm going to look at a light weight tomorrow morning that is for sale local to me what should i be on the look out for? I know tin worm is going to be an issue where are the bad spots for it? what should i look for during the test drive etc? Any help appreciated as this is my first serous look at a landy!

The chassis is the BIG one, the rest is Ali. I would be looking at the Dumb irons, Outriggers etc etc etc etc

that was the plan i know the man selling it as i have bought the last two vans off him. is all the body ali or is there bits that are steel?

I'm pretty sure bulkheads are steel too, and they're very expensive. Certainly applies to standard Series vehicles.

I do like LWs, but you have to remember these are two seat tractors. It doesn't look to bad but pictures never show the full story. Drivetrain is pretty std, in that other LRs use the same parts. but that Petrol motor will drink like a sperm whale. As RTB said the bulkheads are like rockinghorse poo, so either make sure it's solid or be prepared to replace/repair. Not sure about replacement chassis's, Richards may make one, but it will not be cheap.

have found replacement chassis but the price is half what the vehicle is worth! its going to be a toy as i have a nice newish van but will go to work in it what the weather is nice! but i only live 4 miles from work so not to far! will definatly be takeing a persuading screw driver and decent torch with me and having a good prod and crawl under her

Just put the transfer box in neutral and use the main box to vary the speed of the PTO driven device you fit or have fiited.

A good thing about ex-wd LR's will have serious amount of underseal from new which helps stop chassis rot. The only place on mine was very front of dumb irons.

None - it was built to be either, just bolt the right bits on!

that good news i was concerned that who ever did the conversion might have made lots of mess that the tin worms could bet at! wasn't thinking of painting black more JCB yellow with black canvas

Similar to Series, but different in that bulkheads are different. Tops rot and are many ££s, recon/repro ones are out there.
Chassis is different, removable gearbox x-member, different rear x-member. Outriggers are different.
Seatbox and tunnel are different to Series.

If the chassis is covered in wax and underseal it could be hiding rot, amazing what comes to light when that crap is cleaned off. This was like mine, looked OK but when cleaned back...

Tilt & sticks makes it worth more than a hardtop or truck cab.
Any Lwt-specific bits can be expensive. Bumpers aren't the same as civvy for instance.

Probably was either always 12v or is converted to 12v by now (from 24) but if its still 24v some parts cost a lot.

Check the chrome swivel balls for leaks and pitting. If pitted someone may have filled them with grease to stop leaking oil, which seems to shag the top kingpins (they don't get lubed). Freewheeling hubs also contribute to this, they don't splash lube around so top pins dry up. Mine were rusted.

If steering is very ropey check wheel bearings, swivel balls (either could cause play), and there's 6 balljoints in the steering plus the steering box.

Not sure quite whats going on with that roll cage finishing in the cab like that.
50 mph is slow, should do a bit better but notalot... 65ish.

Check it doesn't jump out of gear on the overrun.

£2k's seems a good price for that on the face of it.

Lightweight club folks favour Undercover Covers I think they're called, for canvas - about £220-£240 something like that.
