You'll need a mortgage if you're running the 2.25 petrol engine. My friend's lad took his 5 bearing engine out and fitted a 200Tdi in his Series 2a as he was only getting 10mpg and that was on a good day. I like to see things kept original but for an everyday user it was just not practical so it had to go. I did a bit of soldering on his heater matrix today as it was a bit cracked. He looked at a new one but they are a bit different and cost £118 + £8 post. I've not heard back so it must have cured the leak

That's a bit low, I used to get 17-18mpg in my L/W. Even the chap who bought it commented on how smooth the engine was

i used to get about that. then i overhalled the gearbox, fitted overdrive and fettled the timeing and mixtures. And then the spedoo gave up the gost so didn't workout what it did then! fixing spedoo is on the list of things to address so should be able to work out the mpg then

Mine did 18mpg too, I like those engines, so smooth and a low tickover.

I used to drive Land Rovers all the time when petrol was cheap working for council gardening towing gang mowers and marking football pitches. We had to log all our petrol and maintenance and can honestly say that even when not towing 3/4 ton of equipment never saw anything like 18mpg, more like 12mpg but I wasn't buying the fuel so it didn't matter. Lightweights must be lighter on fuel as well.

they are heavier than a civi one! there only lightweight when you have taken off all that's not totally needed!

They are all part of the wing, not separate boxes rivetted on like the series 3 type.

i thorght they were a seperate unit. they looked bolted on from all the photo's id seen

Proper 2A ones are all in one, You used to be able to get the early wings NOS for £35 each as no one wanted them years ago.

Early ones, maybe only pre-production I'm not sure, didn't have the curved box, but had an "eyebrow". My wings were flat-fronted, original I thought as was no trace of home-done mods / folding (i.e modded S3) and everything else done by PO(s) on the poor thing was ****.

the pre productions had the little eyebrow things but by the time they went into production they had the curved fronts. successful lunch time today managed to remove the top off a knacked radiator and resolder it to the top of a good radiator that had a knacked top! that means i can now sell my reconditioned series 1 radiator that i was going to use until i realised how much they fetch on eBay!
