Ah it was what the my breakdown cover told me to do that to get it towed out. Didn’t want to but at that time wasn’t sure how damaged the car was.

Fair enough, I understand a bit better now.
A right PITA though, as once the tin of worms (aka, the insurance companies), is opened
it's difficult to close it again, whilst enjoying a shed load of grief and hassle, in the process.
But, I can see how you can easily get caught up with it, without really intending to.

Or, avoid all the hassle of all of the above and ask for a 'cash in lieu settlement'. The car never leaves your ownership, you don't have to 'ask to keep it' and there is no record of any classifications. Done it twice with my older cars, no issues, no hassle, both repaired by me with second hand parts.

Look it up, I'm surprised it's not more commonly known about for people that do their own spannering.

Yep, I've done this. I wrote a letter to the insurer saying that I would take payment in lieu of damages use good used parts and repair the bike myself to my own standards. It was also only cosmetic damage. I gave them a figure and they just paid it.

Unless you actually make a claim for repairs they won't write it off, surely? Seeing as it happened just last night I'd be surprised if they have come out and even had a proper look yet.

It's all done quickly these days thanks to the digital age.

Mrs Robo had a bump one morning, logged into her insurer to report it, filled in a questionnaire which included photos of the damage taken "live" on her phone, a few hours later they dropped off a courtesy car and collected hers for repair.

I did this loads of times for my classic car customers, ask for, cash in lieu and DON NOT let anyone take it away, don't take NO for an answer, or "we don't do cash in lieu" they all do, remember it is your car.......................

Try not to release the vehicle if you want to keep it.

If they take it away chances are will come back in a different condition to how you left it. (More dents/less fuel etc)

Would speak to them about buy back especially as known history of the vehicle.

I deal alot with salvage and can at times work well with finances.

Right well being a seafarer has its advantages I have been called back to work for three weeks from Monday so. The insurance company has agreed to transport the vehicle back to me and keep it at my place as they don’t want to pay storage fees for the 3 weeks I’m away and un contactable.

Back in the day we used to do something called a "Contract Repair" where you agreed a price with the insurance company to repair the vehicle below the write off price.

"Contract Repair - Both parties agree that the Repairer will undertake a repair to a vehicle for a fixed amount, and that the Repairer can at its sole discretion choose a repair process and method which will enable the vehicle to be repaired to a safe and satisfactory standard for the agreed amount. When a ‘contract repair’ is undertaken the Repairer accepts the responsibility for repairing all the accident related damage for the agreed fixed amount. If having commenced the repair process additional damage, which is a result of the accident, is discovered, the Repairer is also required at its own expense to repair the additional damage."

Definitely don't agree a write off, ask for a cash settlement, as others have said. I did it with a classic car that got flooded with clean water in 2007. Once it was dried and cleaned it wasn't in much worse condition and I was £1700 up, plus the car to resell without a stain on its character.

Personally even if they write it off you got history and a payout and can out it back on the road easy enough and with the value of the vehicle a salvage title won't make too much of a difference especially if you want to drive it into the ground.

It’s just cosmetic damage car runs and drives fine everything works, crash was so slow didn't even set off the air bags or even auto tension/lock the seat belt. No one else involved. Tough old beast glad wasn’t driving anything lesser lady had to be cut out the car just a mile further back. Cops skidded when they arrived and another nearly went into the Armco.

This is what happens if you slip into a pair of Jeremy Clarksons shoes when there is black ice about, speed kills gets expensive in these weather conditions More important nobody hurt.

Somebody side swiped my brothers 2013 BMW 4 series. Just scratches and a dent on the near side. Insurance wrote it off after their body shop quoted £7K to sort it.

He took the insurance payout of £8K and baught the car back for £2K.
Got a mobile body repair done for £700 and it looks perfect again. Hes £5K up too.

See what insurance will pay out and if its economical to buy back and repair yourself.

Needs thinking about before involving the insurance company? Likely a local repair and a non-written off vehicle with a decent resale value (without that “written off” tag attached to it.

Set against increased future insurance cost and possible loss of NCB, the advantage of u=involving the insurance company may even be a definite negative!

If I were to ‘ditch’ my little car, I doubt I would even consider telling the insurance company. Simply write it off myself, what with the value of it, the excess on the policy, the NCB (even though it is a protected policy), etc, etc.

just drive it, I was in the same position 20 years ago when I has a little bump, mechanically the car was fine, just cosmetic damage and Ive been driving it since, none of the panels on the front of the car are straight though on older cars its called "character"

And a lot less likely to get nicked.

Something similar happened to me in the last cold snap. Similar to you only cosmetic damage I just repaired the jeep myself and didn't bother with insurance as in Ireland insurance is a joke I've only one insurer in the entire market who will cover me and that's because I'm an exciting customer if I were to leave and go back they wouldn't cover me again. All because my Toyota land cruiser is a 1997 there not interested so as I've no competitors to go to they could simply charge me whatever figure they seem fit and I'd just have to suck it up. That's the sad stat of affairs over here need insurance by law be in reality nobody ever uses it (unless last resort) because the government let's insurance company do as they please. Rant over glad u were hurt can't see the full damage in the pics but maybe u could just pic up some 2nd bumpers ect and repair it yourself ull be paying for it one way or another

To be fair on my self I was driving with my sensible hat on at that point having just gone past an accident, just had a bit of bad luck.
