Always wanted a Technics set as a kid but never got one.
One piece of Lego, many pieces of Lego. Reminds me of the time I had to explain sheep its the plural of sheep, rather than sheeps

Exactly the same here...I don't think Technics was ever stocked in Yorkshire it seems.
That 3rd box down is the one I always wanted!
At least I didn't keep the tradition going...a little fella was very pleased with this at Christmas

I haven't brought any Lego this year.
I thought I would get my grandson started on Meccano. So bought him a big set that he could make several models with. I saw him using it the other day, I was horrified, it was plastic!!!
I've told my daughter I was going to look out for a proper metal set for him, with nuts, bolts spanners and screwdrivers. Just like I remember it.
He has lots of Lego too.

Plastic Meccano been around for years.
But both the modern metal and plastic sets are rubbish compared to the old sets.
Are the new metal sets rubbish?
I might have to see if I can find him a vintage set. I think it's a great way to get him used to nuts and bolts, spanners and screwdrivers. I don't want him to end up like his father, who is a lovely guy and a great dad, but he just doesn't know how to use tools of any sort!
Think Doubleboost mentioned sorting some old type Meccano out. Don't know if I missed it.

A friend's kid is 17, he's been into Lego since he was tiny, and a couple of years ago I was joking that he must be growing out of it; I bet him £20 that he would grow out of it by his 16th birthday and I lost my money..
And we were privately thinking, surely he ought to be more interested in girls, motorbikes etc, like I was at that age? Is he secretly gay or something like that? What's going on?
But you chaps have reassured me it's Perfectly Normal

We had (around the turn of the 70s) a Lego-alike set called Betta Builda... the bricks were a lot smaller than Lego ones and there were door and window frames, green roof tiles. I never knew anyone else to have it... and now of course I'll have to Duck it (don't like Google) 
ETA: like this - I didn't realise it was by Airfix... and Betta Bilda, I beg its pardon:

I recall that when my bro and I got into WW2 wargaming in our early teens we used the BB set to create ruined villages etc. - the smaller bricks made for better-proportioned buildings for 1:72 scale Tigers and Shermans than Lego would have
