That surely is the definition of socialism though, everyone will be equal bar the few who will be MORE equal.

It could be a definition of populism, since everyone enables their lifestyle and listens to what they have to say.

Everyone is heavily invested in the personality ethic, and the character ethic seems to be falling by the wayside.

I once worked at a decent size data centre where we managed the ONS database and BBC iPlayer among other stuff a few years ago. I won't mention Siemens Maidenhead by name because I successfully sued them for <whatever>. The server rooms were half full of massive battery banks for automated UPS and the rooms themselves were like walking into a fridge. It was so noisy in there you'd really have to wear ear defenders. There were (are?) a couple of shipping container sized generators though I don't recall ever seeing them fired up.

Security was incredibly tight so the real boffins (not me I hasten to add, I was a video/streaming geek) installed a few "back door" workarounds to avoid the burden of having to go through the parlava of passwords and bottlenecks of single point monitored access. No machines in the server rooms were allowed to have USB sockets or CD/DVD drives, the iron doors were security locked and remotely monitored etc.

But in the summer, it was quite common to see the doors propped open and the windows wide open to promote cooling. Anyone could wander in but you wouldn't have to. Any one of us could log into the system even from home (!) because the Unix geeks had installed a "secret" remote service.

Having said that, you'd struggle to "steal" the ONS database. It was several Petabytes iirc (millions of Gb) and you'd either need a hundred years to transfer it or a van full of hard drives to make off with it. Like I said, information is HEAVY!

I have also done my fair share of work in data centres over the years,and yes, they have diesel backup generators on site, which are usually tested at least yearly, but no way do they run continuously off them for any length of time.

Our current data centres have two feeds from the national grid (coming in separate physical directions, so that one JCB cannot accidentally take out a data centre), separated all the way to the server rooms, without the cables crossing over each other (again, to minimize the digging risk). Same with data feeds, btw.

If power goes down, a UPS will automatically cut in, and the UPS will support the DC for at least 30 minutes, so that the diesel generators can be brought online.


Similar setups or many central london offices (and elsewhere, I imagine). My current building only has one power feed, but all the PCs and other 'important' stuff is backed by UPS, and if there's a power blip our generators come online automatically within about 30-60 seconds (for things like ceiling lights etc).

The latest developement on this is to use these generators in tandem with the grid for demand side load and frequency response - essentially, to fill troughs in generation and grid capacity. People with standby Generators are paid well for this, and essentially it is counted as an income.

That's grand, and is the way it should be.
Unfortunately, several bean-counters over the years in various places have decided that since the public power supply is so reliable the genset is an unnecessary expense, and sold them off.
There are now a surprising number of places without back-up power.
It's only people at risk though, so that's all right.

Way more, the impact of the actual cars is naff all compared to the flying/travelling.
