Lithium battery fire!

I never leave anything on a charger if I can't keep an eye on it. Everything that doesn't need to be on is switched off when I go to bed or out of the house. The only things left on are the fridge and the central heating boiler.
Phones, tablets and battery tools are only charged during daytime and never left unattended.
I have two lipo batteries for a rc rockcrawler I don't use a lot and they are stored in the workshop in a metal box.
In the house of my ex and kids all phone chargers are plugged in all of the time, even when there nothing being charged.
I've warned them a million times, but it's all to deaf ears.

I had a fakita dual cheapie charger, I also have two genuine 3ah batteries and half a dozen eBay cheapies between 4 and 6ah.

Just been putting up a curtain rail, stuck battery into charger and left it on the lounge floor, fortunately next to the door and with toolbox between it and the new curtains.

Was in kitchen when my Wife started screaming that something had exploded. Managed to kick it into the hallway (tiled floor) unplug it and chuck it out of the front door where it happily continued combusting itself. Gave it a good going over with the hosepipe until it stopped sizzling. Solder melted into carpet which she wants to replace anyway, fortunately nothing else caught fire.


I'll have to inventory the remaining batteries so I can work out which of the various batches I have it was, can't remember what it looked like before exploding.

A reminder to us all to be careful with these things, I normally leave batteries on charge in the shed overnight, won't be doing that again.

Sad to say, this is getting more common place.

Place the remains in a bucket of water for at least 7 days.

Same thing happened to me on the lounge table, real Makita battery and charger!
Luckily like you I managed to eject the lot as it was starting to become a firework!
Glad you caught it before it became catastrophic!

There's a market there for someone; battery charging boxes. Could be quite thin steel, some means of letting the cable in and a smoke alarm.

Search Li-Po bag, the RC crowd use them.

I tend to charge my Li batteries for garden tools in the kitchen, but maybe that needs re-thinking?

Nah, you just need a Fray Bentos pie tin, like Big Clive.

you dont seem to hear about many mobile phone with their lipo / li-ion batteries catching fire / exploding these days, which may suggest that the technology is viable, but its the application that is causing the issues.

Local house clearance bloke enlightened us as he cleared a smoke damage house, we now only buy genuine batteries and chargers and never leave on charge un attended

I can’t believe people still buy fake chargers or batteries, it’s pure stupidity.

Honestly you would be better off with Parkside etc rather than fake higher priced brands.
