Makita Battery Drill

Wow, glad you got it working. I've got several of those old 7 & 9 volt Makita drills in storage, will have to dig them out to see if the batteries are still good. The flashlights / torches were nice, especially the neon bulb one which you could hang it across your chest; much better than a head mounted light.

Not worth messing around with old batteries. I got generic 4000 amp hour batteries for 12 quid off the bay

Advice from here and a bit of googling suggests they are bomb proof. Only issue seems to be corrosion on the battery contacts, quick clean with a fibre glass pencil sorted that out

Not as powerful as modern drills but for £24 quid and a few hours messing around I’ve got a useful bit of kit

Oh, a warning to anyone one planning to do similar

DO NOT TEST THE DRILL WHILE THE CASING IS APART. BITS FLY OFF EVERYWHERE. Even though I knew they might and had my hand over them

Fortunately I was on my desk, and managed to recover all the parts. Quick consultation of the exploded parts diagram and it all went back. No missing parts

An antique 9.6v Makita. As used by plasterboard fixers. They are indestructible. Pretty sure that it will work straight after you remove the furry green corrosion from the battery socket in the drill.

They were the Mutts back in the day. I had two drills, a screw gun and the angle drill all stolen one night from my fathers garage where I had been working. I was absolutely gutted.

Thanks for the tip, didn't think compatible batteries would be available. These drill kits were great in their day. Think I might still have the 3" saw too ? It was the dogs boloxs as you say for cutting out holes or trimming drywall, saved a tremendous amount of time and effort.

Thanks, I checked them out. I see that the 7.2 volt batteries are also available !
How long will they last , at least the tools could be used again; your thread here has made my day.

have a 90degree Hitachi mains drill with a worn chuck...
tried the above...screw out and a belt with a hammer chuck wont spin off at all...
any heavier hammering, scared I'll bust the gearbox.....
now what....?.no where to take it here.......?
dont use it often but would be nice to tighten the chuck with the key.....

and if you didn’t know, it only goes in one way, but there are a few options

I've had several of these, the switch benefits from an occasional squirt of contact cleaner, and then working the switch back and forth with no battery in the drill. They also work well when connected to a 12v lead acid battery, ideal when working on boats.

That sound like the sort of thing that he might say - and he lives all curled up, in his "play-pen", too!
