Wow, glad you got it working. I've got several of those old 7 & 9 volt Makita drills in storage, will have to dig them out to see if the batteries are still good. The flashlights / torches were nice, especially the neon bulb one which you could hang it across your chest; much better than a head mounted light.
Not worth messing around with old batteries. I got generic 4000 amp hour batteries for 12 quid off the bay
Advice from here and a bit of googling suggests they are bomb proof. Only issue seems to be corrosion on the battery contacts, quick clean with a fibre glass pencil sorted that out
Not as powerful as modern drills but for £24 quid and a few hours messing around I’ve got a useful bit of kit
