I have completely rebuilt my Boxford PD8 drill, I ended up buying NOS bearings off eBay, was much cheaper than Simply bearings, RHP branded 7205 was £10, SKF KLNJ1 were £8 each.

The bearings have arrived. So having never changed an angular contact bearing before, I’m assuming you instal these with the writing facing upwards, in the same direction as pressure will be applied to the bearing from the cutting action? Which should force the opposing taper of the raceways together?

The thinner outer race side is the thrust side, so the right hand picture.

Took 2 welds to make it drop out

FWIW the original bearing is a Hoffman 125ACD

And now we have one new FAG bearing fitted with the appropriate sized aluminium drift and a dead blow as it wouldn’t fit in the fly press

Someone had been at the quill/spindle before looking at the state of the quill seal and missing I presume two o rings that sit in the grooves.

Made a quick tool to tap the top bearing in.

that’s done and greased.

now the locking collar goes on.

I tidied the seal up in the lathe but have no o-rings and none seem to be listed on the parts list. Will need to look into this. Perhaps @brewdexter can advise what his had?

Whats the (rough size) may have o -rings that would fit ?

Well that was a waste of time. Something is not right with the bearings it seems or they’ve got contaminated during assembly. It’s now together but has an almost notchy feel.

Another setback with this poxy drill. Perhaps it’s cursed. Bearings both went in feeling really good.

I guess I better strip it all back down.

Right got it stripped then out back together and now it’s working! And super smooth!

Right, I think I would have been better pressing the top bearing into the quill, then pressing the spindle in with the angular contact bearing on it, in from the bottom. You’d still need a bush behind the top bearing to stop that being pressed out of the quill.
Instead of pressing the AC bearing into the spindle then trying to press the spindle down, as that is likely to make the spindle want to push the inner race off the AC bearing, which is why I made a tool with the right sizes and a hole through it.

I don’t know I’m not a spindle rebuilder. Opinions?

A hydraulic press would of been handy and quicker than taping in with a dead blow keeping the thing plumb

What this has highlighted is the need for a proper press and a few different bearing pullers.

And perhaps some sort of bearing heater. I’m fact I could of used my hot plate since they are not shielded bearings. I probably should have done that.

But anyway it’s together and I know they’re brand new bearings now and it should be accurate. The DTI will reveal all no doubt.

We have a forging hydraulic press. I should build one really. The price of 60T rams is putting me off lol.
