A standard fluorescent tube has pretty much the same efficiency as an LED one. LED lamp posts are no more efficient than metal halide etc.
Obviously they are more efficient than halogen or filament bulbs but the excess heat from old fashioned bulbs was quite useful in British weather!
I have a great big bulb that takes a while to heat up to full light but I don't have a clue what it is.
LEDS have several advantages. They can be connected to sensors so only come on when motion is detected. Not safe in a busy warehouse with forklifts whizzing around though.
Also dimmable as you said but we need as much light as we can get.
Given a choice with new metal halide fittings I think they still have the edge for many warehouse users. Sadly the metal halide stuff is becoming harder to find now.
A 50 year life span counts for nothing these days
I don't like the sodium bulbs. I had 2 of them. Changed for metal halide 4000k. Look like LEDS. 42000 lumens. Far better. Same fittings.

Until very recently they were more energy efficient than LED!
They still are but look dim because they are so orange. The metal halides look far more impressive.

Not any more, LED technology has finally reached the point where it can be more efficient than sodium.
It's only the real high end stuff at the moment but it will filter down into the mid-range stuff soon enough
I bet they will never last as long though!
My local clay shooting ground had 1000w halide floodlights for night shooting and they changed them to led equivalents last year, they appear brighter but they don't have the range of the halides the targets have had to been set closer because you cannot see the clearly.
That is what I have noticed with mine. You think WOW but 41,000 lumens for the metal halide v 27000 for the LED. They appear a tiny bit better but then you realise they aren't filling such a big area.
Mind you as I now have working lights the difference is huge

metal halide lights are far outlasting led. i do a lot of them on carparks and schools and when the bulbs go easy to replace and only cost about 18 quid not replace the whole fittings for a lot more cost and only lasting about 5 or 6 years

It sounds like someone has specified the wrong lights for the application, LED fittings rarely have the same broad coverage than metal halides etc.
You have to think a bit more about the application and pay attention to the design data when specifying LED lighting.
The problem is your average DIYer or electrician will just go into a shop and buy whatever suits their price range rather than what is right for their application.

i must be more than average then have fitted a lot of led fittings in houses offices and shops and carparks and all have been well adequate without going ott and all the lux levels have been correct and its never been down to saving a few shillings
They seem incredibly bright close up but don't throw the distance of the halides

I now have 5 LED highbays running a mix of 300W and 200W. I also have 3 metal halide 400W with new bulbs fitted. The metal halides are slightly better than the LEDS. Sodium weren't as good I agree but a simple bulb change makes all the difference.
