The silver one is quite good if plasma cutting as it sort of shines up under the mask,plus it dont melt/fade away

After reading somebody on the forum bestowing the virtues of these pencils decided to buy some & try them out. Marked the welded line I was trying to follow but couldn't see anything through the mask (I was hoping to see some sort of glowing line) May be ok for plasma cutting but didn't seem to cut the mustard for welding
For marking rough steel generally use French chalk but for smoother stuff fall back on using marking out blue & a sharp scriber

Use a proper carbide tipped scriber for anything accurate, and markal crayons for rough markings. Marker pen is okay, on nice clean sheet metal jobs.

Eclipse make one of the best ones I've used.
Used day in day out for years.

Yes. They come in 1.6, 2.4, 3.2mm dia. Original, ceriated or lanthanated flavours. Not sure if there is a vegan option.

I have an old 1MT HSS reamer that someone has sharpened up. It does everything including puncture wounds and stays sharp after a few trips to the floor.

Ive started using a scribe most of the time ,
Pro's :it gives an accurate line
Cons: sick of getting stabbed with it when I put it in my overall pocket then kneel down.

Lost count of the times I was told as an apprentice never to put sharp objects in pockets.

We've tried all sorts over the years. The best were some cheap paint markers, but then we started getting everything galvanized.

We were reccomended these by the galvanisers:

They're great! They don't dry out, the marks rub off with water, they last a good amount of time, and the chisel nibs are as good as a sharpie when new...

I’m just mean.....just smooth the sides of a broken hack saw blad....going a
Sharpe corner.....scratches thru mill scale most of the time and shows up as silver thru the rusty surface....
Always have loads laying about the place....fab bench milling machine...u get the idea.....

Actually I just use a pen type scribe.

For soapstone, or french chalk as you call it on this side of the pond, I've always found it quick and simple to slide it along the face of a single cut file for a sharp marking edge.
