Darn you lot anyway - I just bought 6 red & 6 silver streak pencils on ebay!

I have a diamond tipped scriber I have had for many years & never needs sharpened!

I walked into the garage one day & caught my Dad about to use it for a centre punch! A few choice words were said!

They are really good pencils but incredibly delicate. I have been looking for a better pencil sharpener that doesn't make such a long fine tip. I think something designed for makeup or eyeliner would be suitable because they also have a "soft core". I'm looking for something that will sharpen it to more like a 45º angle. If I can't find something, I'll probably make one.

They do a version now like a retractable pencil with a sharpener built in but it's £15 just for the holder, the leads are extra!

i like the milwaulkie (spelling) inkzall fine markers their only £1 each...or a 4mm sharp tungston for anything fancy

After some searching there is a sharpener for makeup pencils that gives you a short wide angle point. I'm undecided whether to go ask for one in boots or get it online!

I've got one of those red marker pencils - I bought the silver one first, but silver against clean mild steel isn't much of a contrast in the lighting I've got. My biggest trouble with sharpening it in the "colour" side of a normal pencil sharpener is that I get broken lead which leads to bit breaking off - presumably it's broken during shipping, because I'm careful not to drop it. I just use the bench grinder to sharpen it now, but it needs doing pretty much every time I use it.

I did buy a pack of the cheap "Sharpie" clones from The Works, but they're terrible. Lots of them are really light colours, and the few that do show up go dry really quickly. I guess that's what you get at £1.50 for ten. I bought some genuine Sharpies from the Tesco clearance shelf (dual ended, pack of about six down to £3) which I'll start on when I get through the current market. I'm finding that the solution for now is to not leave the marker in the shed overnight where it can get cold, and keep it in my pocket when I'm not using it.

No it was about 40mm in diameter with a 15x 10mm square nib so you could cover large areas
It was a paint pen like used for writing on windscreens just filled with engineers blue

Nope, it doesn't. That's what makes it a good paint-on mask for silver soldering. The flux won't attack the tip-ex and the solder won't stick to it. Added benefit is that the part doesn't oxidise with the heat wherever it's been coated.

I've been using a 3.2m TIG tungsten electrode in a Faber-Castell clutch pencil for a while now, which works pretty well. The tungsten keeps a decent point, is easy to resharpen, whilst the pencil makes it easier to hold and a little less of a liability.

Well engineerd pen and cap easy to handle even with gloves on. Writes on a lot of surfaces.

Depends on the job . Day to day work is marker Stanley ones out of woodies have a really nice tip on them . If it’s more accurate I use masking tape and a pencil to draw out the markings for holes and then dot punch. If I really need to go more accurate I get the stuff done with cnc. But always have chalk sticks there aswel . Really depends on what I’m doing . If I’m copying something and it’s not an issue il clamp it down tight and spray over it with a very different colour to get a fast marking be suprised how often that works

Well I bit the bullet & I bought 6 silver streak & 6 red riter welders pencils on ebay.

Not very pleased with them! The lead in 3 of the silver streaks slides up inside the wooden shaft when you put pressure on the nib & the lead in at least one of the red riters seems to be broken inside the pencil. Whenever you sharpen them a long piece of red lead comes loose.

Looking at Amazon reviews it is not an uncommon problem!

I mentioned earlier that I have the same problem, not only with these but with normal pencils. I just sharpen them on the grinder now which seems to get around it.

Yes. They come in 1.6, 2.4, 3.2mm dia. Original, ceriated or lanthanated flavours. Not sure if there is a vegan option.

No carbon...not tungsten carbide.

4.0mm tungsten for me with electrical tape wrapped around. I buy the Markal pencils but they seem to get less and less durable and snap quicker and quicker. Soapstone I use a fair bit of. Sharpies I go through like no ones business. I use a lot of paint markers, I’ve found some markal ones are much better than other. I think I’m on the HP ones now. I’ve had a few that were dried out from new! At £5 a go that’s a joke

I've started using the refillable silver streak and they're much less prone to breaking off etc.
