I have a horizontal mill and a Bridgeport horizontal with the vertical head . never had the need to use horizontal. as said in above post/ if you were riving large arias of plate edge down ideal but not much else apart from gears

Doesn't @Maker have a horizontal mill, and would probably comment on its usefulness or not.

Yeah, I've got an Elliott 181 horizontal. It's not as useful as a vertical but to be honest I'm more limited by lack of tooling than the abilities of the machine. A big angle plate would make it a bit more useful for drilling or slotting but obviously still no match for a proper mill.

What i done with my Tom Senior, which was basically just a Horizontal mill with a makeshift knuckle vertical head, added on by the makers as an afterthought, was to bolt a Bridgeport head onto the overarm. It gave me much more capacity in the z-axis (the original was only about 5 inches), and a quill so if i wanted to drill holes at an angle, it was easy, also power feed for boring etc.

Why not just buy a Bridgeport ? Simply not enough room in the shed for it.

My shed is about 22ft long, but is not 9 ft wide. Its narrow, which restricts the machines i can get in to it. The father built it and like most things he did, he made a horses behind of it.

The horizontal feature of my mill I thought, without ever using it, to be a useful feature for mass removal of stock, and I got the impression that cutters for them are cheaper as well. Though the vertical head is most likely going to be the work horse. But the horizontal seems to be a real nice thing to have on occassion.

Here's the Myford lathe attachment I have on mine, on ebay at the moment (not mine). And it's rather pricey, although it is stand alone. It could be a good option for someone with a Myford in good condition, save a bit on tooling?

I sold my Amolco with table and a shoe for the Boxford for £500 in 2008. I don't think that's too much.

Mine is actually on Lathes, in my old workshop.

a dore westbury mark 2 with some good adaptions to it however the base plate is different smaller infact to a dore westbury 2

A lot of sellers on ebay are getting very stroppy, i was looking at a nice uk made dividing head the other day and the list of conditions laid down by the seller was crazy. Maybe they have good reason, tricksters etc.
