I should say at this point that when I used the oerlikon rods things improved a lot, most likely down to the rods being better quality.

Yes I can get a good weld every time in position and horizontal.

Ok point taken, I was under the impression that down was easier than going up, I wasnt looking to be a 'pro' welder, just to be able to throw brackets & simple light stuff together and 'look' nice.

Which going down is fine for on the most part but if one of those brackets needs to support a bit of weight you’d be better off learning to go up. It’s about learning to weld. It’s not supposed to be easy.

For small stuff you turn the job over and weld in the flat position, neater, faster, and more comfortable, no one welds out of position unless they have to.

Here is some v down 7010 my inverter is not really man enough for a 4mm 7010 but I'll do some better stuff just pulled my transformer welder out or I'll use a engine drive

7010 are a stronger cel . Often used in sheet piling (because they are fast and strong). Those beads look awful like you treated them like a regular 7018 to me But then my eyes ain't that good now and I am looking on a phone
I run quite a few now because of the extra speed mainly

Heck it's about speed in that job. Cel none the less has been specified on plenty routes.

Not much use for structural, no, make you right there. With pipelines, cels are used almost exclusively arent they. Lincoln 5p+ for the root most of the time, then hot pass and filled/capped with 7010 or 8010.

Must be preheats, interpass temps and time constraints in the procedures that get around crack issues??

He’s not said anything incorrect as far as I can see.
It’s not a low hydrogen rod it’s a cellulosic rod so the coating will contain a substantial amount more hydrogen. It’s also a high tensile cel. Both of these indicating it’s more likely to crack under high stress application. Pre heat and pwht would be pretty essential if you were to fill a butt with them.
I had a quick look and Lincoln electric recommendation on this consumable is for filling and capping on lower strength steel pipe 60ksi max (x60) only
Where as they state it’s suited as a single root on x80. This pretty much corresponds exactly with brads post.
Low stress or stress relieved joints Multiple passes are fine.

Yes mate.

A low hydrogen rod is quoted as having weld metal with less than 15ml/100g of diffusible hydrogen.
A gp electrode like a 6013 can have around 25-35ml of dH2.
A cellulosic rod deposits weld metal of over 35ml/100g dH2 with most being around 50ml.

Add that into a stressed structure or a material with a susceptible microstructure and you’ve got a delayed crack waiting to happen. Particularly in multipass welds if they have not been subjected to PWHT or material is over 12mm thick.

The difference is API pipe is soft and doesn’t have a susceptible microstructure.
S & P are very very closely controlled as is the Carbon content.
Welding of the root, hot, fill and cap passes takes place right after one another keeping the material above the critical temperature where the hydrogen diffuses easily.

It’s a lot easier to buckle a piece of steel than to stretch a piece of steel.
