Motor Start Capacitor

Abac B312-50 3HP compressor won't start as the motor start capacitor has gone bang

Can any one confirm that it's a 30uf cap that required? The markings have faded and I suspect it's a 30uf but just need to confirm

Yeah I would say that sounds about right for 3hp about 20-30uf should be fine!
If you have an old switch start fluorescent light you may find one in that about the right size as an emergency replacement!

All depends on the motor I have a 0.75hp motor which uses a 80uf capacitor. I just got one from ebay seller hvacstore2010, was sent very quickly.

Is it an issue if you fit a slightly bigger rated cap?

When I've needed a motor cap, I've called in at a rewind place, the ones I've been to have a box of recovered caps from scrap motors. They will probably know straight away what you need as well.

I dunno, but too small a capacitor will make the starting weak and that's no good for a compressor. 40uf at least.I reckon that semi-obliterated number is a 4 rather than a 3 so I'd go with a 40uf at least.

That looks like a run capacitor, run capacitors need to be like for like uf wise. Does it state the cap sizes on the motor rating plate by any chance.

get in touch with facon here send them that picture and the may be able to identify it from the model number, the didgits you thought may be the number 30 i would say is wrong, what you think could be the number 3 looks nothing like the 3 at the end of the model number so dont rely on that

My small compressor has a 25uf fitted, I only know this because the vibration caused the one of the terminals to break off a few days ago, I managed to pare back the plastic casing just enough to expose enough of the broken terminal to solder it back together, while it was off I took a photo with a view to finding a new one.

This is why I have some doubt, it looks like A "3" but I'm not convinced. It's DEFINATELY ending in a zero but not sure what it starts with. I'm aware that too big a cap will burn out the motor coils and too small won't start the motor.

Ive been on the ABAC site too as they are only 20 miles away but they only want to sell a motore from what I can see on the web. Will have to wait till Monday and see if the technical dept can help

the figures under the word mod i dont think are the capacitance figures, the could be the case code, the numbers you want have either rubbed off or was never there

My one is 3hp

I'm not exactly sure, I'd have to check it on monday, from memory though 2.5hp rings a bell.

im looking for older facon capacitors if we can find the same font we might be able to work out what the number is

im wondering if the lack of clarity is intentional, ive looked at other facon capacitors and the 5th and 6th digit always seems to be the same as the cap value but on yours there is a blank where the 5th digit should be

Without the comp, I can't play with the plasma.

On the plus side I was all set for a day in the workshop today, so instead of the plasma I got the lathe up to speed. Just need a T nut to fit my tool post then away I go
