If you use the nozzle from home heating system its designed to work with a low viscosity fuel (more watery) like kerosene or diesel so it vapourises more easily, the oil is too thick so it'll have to be heated to make it thinner and you may get a mist then. The very first one I made, I used the home heating nozzle but had just air blowing through it and had the oil flowing over it, the same as this project but just on a smaller scale.

nozzles on domestic heating boilers run on kero or light heating oil and classed as 28 second burning and pressurised to 150psi

Here's one I made today, just tidied things up a bit, this one has the pipe wrapped around the flame tube but not tight against the tube, there's a 2-3mm air gap, this seems to help stop the oil boiling inside.
Have the measurements on one if anyone wants to make one up. The copper pipe is 8mm.

Interesting to look at, I attempted a babbington a while back, but never got around to it proper as my lash prototype was hard to light and wouldnt run stable, you've obviously got it right.
I tried a fridge compressor as the air supply, and a packing machine glue nozzle for the hole at 0.15mm.
I wanted to make something to heat hot water for a boat heating system, not too dissimilar to yours, but a long tube with a heat exchanger coil around the outside encased in fire brick.
I'm probably a lot safer with a proprietry unit that has a certificate, it'd be great for a 'shop though.

great idea. im going to make a smaller version, that will latch onto the front door of my wood burning stove. then its dual purpose when i run out of wood.
what about running a diy build of this?

but put a better heat exchanger at the top, 6" flue into steel box with scaffol tube running through it fan blowing through scaffol tube reduced back down to 6" flue

I was thinking along similar lines, but there may be a minimum size for which this will work with old engine oil.
That would be more efficient if it had secondary air and wouldnt be complex to do.
Very good idea to get as much heat out of the flue gases.
A tube within a tube so that the area between them is the same as the main flue is the best flue gas to air heat exchanger.
Also if you were burning wood, your better burning it on wood ash rather than a grate, also wood likes to consume combustion air from above, instead of coal than burns air from below.

pandemonium123 you can make it quite a bit smaller, my first one used the nozzle from a kerosene home heat system but everything has to be very precisely set up.
As for the price, well no one pays the price the see anymore so I was hoping to get 150 euro or so for them.
The compression fittings were the only ones I could get at the time but Johnny Max has told me theres a bender available which I can use instead.

What are "copper liners"? my plumbing knowledge is virtually non existent.loving this thread
but as an oil installer I can't help but wonder why you haven't used a pipe bender instead of all those comp' elbows? have you used copper liners?

i have a combuster i built for a propane fired turbine project so might try and addapt that, already has a spark plug ignition and flame tube installed.

Would an old turbocharger runing on the flue gasses provide enough air flow/pressure??
I was just thinking along the lines of once it was running it would be self sustaining. I know you said it runs on 40psi of air but at what mass flow?
I have been researching a small rotary cup burner but my lack of access to a lathe means too much having to be made by someone else making adjustment of the system a PITA.

this is such a goog way to have heat in the garage and workshop when i get a new portamig i might to the same with help from an oil heating engineer
