My new Harrison lathe

You get huge respect from me. And not purely owing to your obvious technical knowledge and skill. A large part of it is due to the fact that you horse those leviathan machines about in what is clearly a bog standard residential setting.

I still have nightmares about getting my Harrison Mill over my gravel drive and into my shop.

I took this on a train. No problems. The guard thought it was cool.

Thanks carl. It can be a mission sometimes. But it's not to difficult will a little planning. The most difficult are the gearhead lathes as they dont come apart as quickly as a cone head.

I wish I could find out. But unfortunately no history on this Harrison exists so I cant even date it.

I love them. I used to zap the cage with a grinder and send the top half to the scrap bin, then use a jigsaw to cut the plastic and make a vertical slit on each corner of the top half. You can then use it as a lid which slides between the wall and the cage of the lower section. Place I worked I used to manage to fit an entire fully dismantled straight six truck engine into one, flywheel and all, a manual chainblock is your friend (electric one was too jerky for precise fitment!)

"In 1948 the lathe, together with an electric coolant pump and tank, faceplate, driver plate, travelling steady, 3 and 4-jaw chucks, 4-way toolpost and 8 metric conversion gears cost £741 : 1s : 0d - or the price of a decent semi-detached in the north of England."

Yes a lot of money. The original documents for the Harrison are buried in a massive archive of history. They are trying to find them. It would be brilliant to have them.

Most of the parts to my Harrison are marked as l11. It has a lot of characteristics from the earlier l5. Mine fits in there somewhere but its just a lot bigger.

I've just noticed that leaning up against the shed behind the lathe bed you have got the legs off a Drummond Model B stand. I recognise them because I have some in my shed.
