my rust removal tank

Just getting the last bits together for my rust tank,

I already have the following

a tank old CWST just need a new tap and some bungs
washing soda
transformer
wire and connectors

my mate has some brake discs he is handing over to me tomorrow for the anodes Steel is ok right?


is there any thing else i need and have forgotten

I use brake discs with an angle iron welded on to connect the anode clip with no problems.

yes that was the plan weld some steel onto the discs 4 or more the bolt them to the tank and connect the wire to the bolts on the outside

Don't forget that your sacrificial electrodes will need cleaning periodically as well otherwise they stop working.

I suppose you could always grab another bit of scrap and reverse the polarity.

tanks was up and running transformer got so hot i turned it off for the night
it was drawing 3amps at 20V bubbling nicely

i guess its normal for the trannie to get that hot is it????

I use a laptop power source which is always very warm, the water warms up too when the anode is clean.

hey good shout i did put 1kg the whole bag into the cwst about 25 galons

u were a lot more diluted than I ok Ill drain 20L maybe 40L or so and top up with fresh water ill have to check the trani again for its rating too if it has one

If you put a 12v bulb in series it will limit the current it can draw.

Can you drop the voltage a little?

I had 1kg (full bag) in about 150 litres, 5A @ 12V which dropped to 3A as the anodes got more coated.

Battery charger barely got warm (8A capable unit) and solution stayed near ambient - on continuous for about 3 days or so.

yes there is another couple of options on the tranie

it meausures more voltage when its not uner load too

That is normal to some extent all transformers will be higher off load.

One of my tanks in use, only had a few small bits.

The red tray underneath is another one of my tanks, old hamster cag base.

For my Power supply I have used.
New Battery charger, not bad. Low current flow.

Charge and start battery charger. Very good, the start function was goo for removing the rust scabs and flakes.

Computer PSU. Good and steady, got a bit warm. Good for keeping warm Gregs sausages rolls.


My tanks.
Coffee Jar, hamster cage, 5 gallon brewing bucket, plastic dustbin, wheelie bin. paddling pool.


Never use Her indoors washing up bowl.
