Doh just went out side to check on the tank and the led has gone out on this psu too.

is there any measurable resistance between the two terminals when you disconnect them from the power supply.

Doesn't sound to terrible that's only around 20ma ish, doesn't explain why the power supply is dying.

I need to take the 2nd dead PSU apart and see what is wrong with it, do you think 6 big brake discs as annodes is too much for the PSU

the CB PSU is not putting out any voltage now either i need to take the case off and see what went wrong with it got the hump now killed 2 perfectly good PSU

If the current draw you measured was accurate and not hitting the limits of the psu it wasn't that that killed them.

Have you got a proper, inline, ammeter instead of a clamp type?

i didnt use the clamp on type I used my multi meter across the + and - terminals read it quick because it goes down soon as u touch them
there could be a fuse inside the CB PSU yes i seem to remember a glass cartrige one

it was working after i checked the amps it was across the terminals was that wrong yes thinking about it it was

If you are measuring on the current setting you need to break the circuit and insert the meter in line with the supply.

doh! so it was probably drawing more than i thought thats why it got hot

Volts are measured in parallel.
Amps in line.
Your meter may be fried, your PSU is.
The fuse may be solder or clipped fix in place easy to fix.
Check it, replace it. Then check your o/p in volts.

ok so fuse replaced well sort of i soldered a 5amp fuse wire to the spent cartridge any way measured the amps again and it is 4.35 the psu is only ratted to 3 amp continuous and 5amp spike so I need to drop the ampage down to save the PSU is a lamp my best bet

That's "OFF LOAD"
It is what the internal resistance of the meter makes the PSU give out.
Now you have a O/P. check your circuit on volts only.
It is easy to do.

i have just soldered a lamp in place its now drawing 1.5amps

psu puts out 13V with the lamp inline the tank is getting 4.8V

that's quite a drop try disconnecting disks till you just have 1 and see what you get.
