my spray booth build

Well guys iv moved into a new unit with much more space for my cars and tools and a friendly panel beater in the unit behind me. My main hobby is spray painting but I'm still learning and he is always giving me advice . He brought me in to his unit and showed me his booth that he is in the process of making and as it's something iv always wanted I decided to put 1000 quid aside and build one too as I'm sick of dust in my paint lack of light Over spray getting all over my tools etc. I said I'd share my experience with everyone on here if they were ever thinking of doing the same.

So first thing I done was clear out the space 8.5x4.5 meters in a good location in the unit . Had 50 16ft lengths of 6x2 delivered the next day and set about it

So with the wooden frame mostly up my attention turned to the floor . It's not good . I looked into grinding machines and self leveling compound but the best solution to me was just re concrete it as it's more straight forward . Ordered 3 ton of sand gravel mix and some cement but they dropped it off at the panel beaters garage at the other side so instead of wheelbarrowing it over I came up with a genius solution lol . So after that didn't work I just started barrowing it over and tomorrow I will begin mixing and pouring the floor

Well today is a boring and painful day for my poor back . Luckily I had this old timer to keep me company . He's not much use when it comes to building unfortunately

Didn't get finished until 4 in the morning and I didn't even get it all finished . My back had enough .

been there done that back ache for a week, don't forget to seal all the way around the booth so its as air tight as you can get it then filter your air in

Andy I have 2 fans rapidfan 500 I'm hoping to get a third as they are quite powerful and common on ebay just shipping is expensive . It will be a cross draft booth the inlet filters will be on the doors and it will extract on the roof at the other side well that's the plan . I'm no expert but hopefully it should work well . Heating on the other hand I have not figured . I have a new diesel space heater but I soon found that the diesel fumes reacted badly with fresh paint so I'm back to the drawing board for that one

you could use the space heater via some sort of heat exchange whereby the heat is blown through a load of copper piping and then clean air pulled past the copper piping and into the booth

Thanks snooper that's the plan I hope to have it as airtight as possible as It will be negative pressure I don't want any dust being sucked in from outside

no it always spoils the job as does the fly that crawls through your nice wet paint

I see what you mean kind of like an intercooler I'm not sure the space heater would be powerful enough for that . It's too small to heat the whole unit so I think I'll be selling it for a bigger one . Just not sure what kind of fuel type to get

look for the cheapest readily available, one thing is it wont be cheap with a lot of extraction
the last booth I used had the filtered air in through the ceiling and extraction was at the rear from the floor to about 3 feet up

Out of interest, what's the sitch with humidity in a booth, did it used to be an issue with solvent based more so than now, given its all water based now?

most booths have no humidity especially if you put them on pre heat before you paint

I think you need positive pressure inside a spray booth?

no it is negative needed they have a vacuum guage on them (manometer) the idea being with a vacuum no dangerous paint fumes escape into the workshop

Temperature and humidity are very finely controlled in the paintshop at work, as fresh air is drawn from outside the weather can affect it so it passes through various conditioning units before it gats to the booths.
