my spray booth build

Looks good, I have recently built a spray booth, I enjoy refurbishing wheels and other small projects

maybe one day I will take on bigger projects.

Have already discovered that I need bigger inlets, my extractor is pulling the doors in and the booth floor has a layer of over spray after each use.

Wow if my booth looks half as good ill be happy . I have 2 questions actually if you don't mind . The first being how did you make your doors airtight . The second being what kind of extractor fan do you have behind that filter

I bought an ATEX 3 phase inline duct fan from Beatson fans in Sheffield, UK, the ducting is 300mm and goes up out the booth into the roof space to the fan then from the fan out a roof duct.

The fan is the proper thing and is fully ATEX certified, it is powered by an inverter which converts 230v single phase to 230v 3 phase.

(ATEX, being insurance approved, explosion proof motor, antistatic impellor blades - no risk of sparking and igniting the fumes)

Doors are being a pig and I am having to alter them as the current input doesn't allow enough air through, the doors are under vacuum and I am getting over spray settling on the booth floor, I have been searching on the WWW and I have seen that cross flow booth's have doors which are basically just frames with 6 / 8 or more panel filters - this is how I will redesign my doors

as for sealing them, I got a role or garage door seal off ebay, has a taper edge for doors to close up to and down the edges I used storm guard E type rubber / foam seal, works a treat, middle of doors I will be using a rubber strip so one door has rubber on inside and other door has it on outside so that when closed, they form like a sandwich effect over the opening.

The normal setup for a spray booth is to have the inlet air fed into the inlet plenum / filter chamber by another fan, a damper reduces the inbound airflow to maintain slightly negative air pressure in the booth, on the bake cycle you have a changeover flap that recycles the hot exhaust air back into the intake plenum to reduce heating costs.

I worked as a spray booth service engineer for a while long ago.

unfortunately, home made booths don't always get built with this in mind, I know I considered this but as I am only spraying as a hobby.

Council are not interested, I did ring them but because I am not a business, They are not interested. If you could share your knowledge of which safety rules I am non compliance with (via private message, I will be willing to chat, maybe we could both learn valuable info from one an other)

thanks man everything u said has been super helpful . I have simce been in contact with a supplier of a proper atex fan supplier . After wasting 2 weeks with different fan setups they were all just way way too weak . I am now going with two 560mm fans on 3 phase with a inverter to run from single plase its not cheap but iv gone so far with the booth having weak airflow is super annoying . Ill get pics up of it tomorrow . Thanks for the links on the rubber seals too

Hi im not doing this as a business the council have zero interest in what im doing i dont have insurance im just a guy renting a workshop as a hobby. It might not be 100% to the modern safety standards but it will be no danger to me or others and thats good enough for me

if u know where to look gear is readily available at a scoop price in england. it must be in short supply in ireland and command a high price along with shipping prices
