Narrow Boat Welding?

I was involved in this one, well still am actually as its not been totally finished engine is at front 1940 ish but brand new 4 cyl watercooled lister with hydro static drive to prop

think the base was 16mm was 18 ton ish there, with no ballast

I don't think my friends boat will be in that sort of condition!

It was in better condition till I scratched the starboard bow getting it out of that building, as it was a little tight, the building was 80 ft diagonal corner to corner and the boat had to be built 68ft long to fit ! was a bit of a job virtually single handed, to get it out of the garage sized door way

ready for the crane, by mechanical means and an old 2.5 ton fork lift as you can see though, the hull was built absolutely straight, oh and there on the floor is the chain blocks I used to pull it all round and through the door took me approx 14hrs and was a little tired at the end of the day.

The crane had to be a short stubby one that fitted in the little alcove where the van and truck are.

In fact the three straps where only to move it to get the crane out coz, he had to go first and set up and he was limited to speed, the trailer was reversed back there further away from the wall to throw the straps over and had more straps put on it for the trip and clear the car park , whilst I refitted the workshop doors. Then we could then travel at twice his speed to catch him up.
What I was more worried about and I wasnt impressed with was the fact the crane driver didnt bring his 5M spreader frame and I voiced my concern ... ErHUM over how close together his lifting strops where !! 30ft and 9ton overhang each end !...that was a LOT of strain on the hull and any slight wiff of a breeze and it could have slipped, I dont think he wanted the job of assembling it, so left it and said it was on another job ! He said oh thats how I always do it we couldnt argue much as it was a sunday morning at 6 oclock etc etc. But it did do it obviously!

Also we werent sure if the trailer was going to have to be shortened to get it out of here vv we thought we might

have had to shrink it to reduce pivot point and get it out then stretch it again but a quick part trail run said it would -----only just though !! it had to travel the way the picture is to the X roads, with 70 ft of trailer causing lag of the rear axles the front bumper of truck was 1 " from the wall !

I do hope this doesn’t sound like I’m being a bitch, I also obviously don’t know who moved it but I do see a lot people pay cheap rates and have companies come without the correct equipment. Hard to say 100% but looking at the pic if that was on a steering trailer you’d have only had to lift it once then got out fine.
That faff may have only been a slight inconvenience but then with the crane driver not having aspreader beam it is a little more unnecessary risk.
As I say, not trying to put you down just sometimes it clicks after something said. May have been fine this time but only takes one thing to go wrong and it cost a lot of money.

Little example, last year I moved a very Large steel section with someone else. The company used cheap crane company saying they could do the job correctly. The crane struggled to lift it. They got it up a little bit. Then their banksman saw him out. As he was pulling from under it the steel caught the trailer and probably caused 10k worth of damage to a new trailer! Not worth the risk with the wrong equipment.

All over actually it was turned over and sunk in a lock

Yes there was a company that made concrete one.

I sold a guy an ag spec perkins 6354 to go in a 60` narrow boat because his one had flood damage . He was having the effluent pumped out of the holding tank and the guy doing the job had inadvertently put the pump on discharge. They were chin wagging on the towpath when the pump changed note, the driver said that will be it then and went down to remove the suction hose only to find the boat half full of effluent A long drawn out legal battle ensued, an even lengthier complete strip out/refit

I dont think I would have wanted the boat back from the insurers

Cheers it's been hard going. So much has been done to it over the last few months. Including through the snow. We had it spray foamed two weeks ago and currently boarding the inside out in-between other jobs.
