Here's another - whilst camping with school at Boxhill I witnessed a runaway horse and was sent (by the girl chasing it) to run to the stables for help. I reckon it was 2 miles away! By the time I got there the place was deserted (a message had got there before me). I went to look around the back and the only resident was a large and angry GSD on a chain. Unfortunately the chain was just long enough for it to reach my rapidly retreating bottom. My reward for my efforts? A free ride over Boxhill. Not a treat I could forgo. Try riding a horse on one **** cheek.

Not tried that, been thrown a couple of times (you never fall off!) and whilst going at a nice canter in the New Forest my mate didn't see the low branch, the horse's head ducked under and Doug was left sitting on the ground.

Sitting here on the computer in me undercrackers (it is 1.10am, and i am trying to get to bed) i have noticed the scar on me leg.... When i was fitting the kitchen i had to scribe the back of the units to fit the cr@p plastering that had been done by some cowboy. Resting the unit against me knee for the fifth time that day i cut another little bit off the back... slipped and cut a lump out of me leg. With blood pouring down me leg i carried on until my trousers kept sticking to the wound, forcing me to seek some form of half-arsed bandage.

I'm reminded by the tools thread - My first set of spanners was a really cheap open ended set, and I was trying to undo a rocker shaft bolt on a Triumph Spitfire. The spanner jaws snapped, and my hand banged very hard against a sharp corner of the cylinder head. Two lessons well learned with that one.

When I was a kid, we bought a new-fangled 'safety' can opener, one of those that slice through the side walls of the can, so that there's no sharp edges on the can. All very well, but it means that the razor sharp edge is now all round the top of the can. So if you fumble with a jumbo sized can of cat food, and try to catch it, you end up with a fish hook shaped scar on your right index finger. Or, at least I did.

This is shaping up like the cunnilingus scar comparing scene in Chasing Amy.

I've fainted three times just reading this thread.

While studying zoology at University in South Africa I was out on a field trip when I felt something that shouldn't have been moving within my shorts.

I slipped my hand up the inside leg to investigate and withdrew it rapidly with an inch long safari ant attached to my finger...

Trouble was before biting my finger, it also bit a Very Sensitive Piece of Anatomy. My balls swelled up so much I couldn't smile for a week...

Years later I was part of a three man crew sailing a 42ft ketch across the South China Sea in the tail end of a typhoon. Middle of the night 8-10 foot swell, I was at the wheel and suddenly found myself surrounded by fishing junks with no riding lights.

Yelled down to get a fellow crewman up to help spot the damn things. The most experienced sailor among us came up, and without attaching a safety line stood up on the cabin roof, just as a junk hove up right in front of us. "Duck" I screamed as I hauled the wheel over. Too slow, he caught the boom full in the chest - Knocked him into the cockpit with three broken ribs. If he'd gone overboard he would have been dead.

Only horsey story, I was in a stable chatting up a girl as she was grooming her horse when it lashed out and kicked the wall, exactly where the girls head had been a millisecond before. I've never seen sharper relfexes.

I was bench testing a wiper motor and got my thumb caught in the bellcrank. It stalled the motor and because of the worm gear I couldn't force the crank back off my thumb. I eventually bent the crank and got my thumb out. A mate who told me to drill the nail to let the blood out, NO CHANCE.

I lost the nail and it still hurts 2 years later when I clip it, it seems a lot tougher too. Holding a pen to write makes me feel sick (especially if I'm writing a cheque)

I cry everytime I write a cheque without the didgy finger.

I have a number of dodgy moments but the best (funiest) is as usualy is for love.

I had my girlfriends car to test.Why she wants a 94 1.2 corsa I'l never know but it wanted a sill for test.

Well as we know this jobs for love so I cracked on cutting the old sill off with a 2 mill cutting disc.

Got the sill off and tydting up with a soft 60 grit and as I was lying on my back "BANG" the fekkker bit and smacked me in the face.....

Bust lip top and bottom.

Well there wasnt mutch blood so I cracked on.

This time with a wire wheel.

Remember this job was for love so not my usual self.

I dropped the grinder on my chest running.

It made a good not out of my t shirt and kept running into my stomache!!!!

I got a little scared at this point and shouted for help....

Nothing so I thought If I can just unplug the grinderfrom the extension??

I tugged at the lead and the exstesion reel flew toward me and smacked me in the face!! (black eye!!!!)

Oh **** I'm gona dye!!!

I thought there is only one option....

What woul you do?????

I pulled on a gauntlet and grabbed the wheel (bearing in mind I copuld'nt switch off the grinder as It was wrapped in my t shirt.

I could feel the wire wheel cutting into my stomach and hand but eventually it gave up and burnt out........

twenty eight stitches later I will never look at a 4 1/2 inch grinder in the same lite again


And to top it off I tried to drive myself to hospital but had to call an ambulance at the end of the street as I was going to pass out.

Nellway - respect on the knackers story (as they say these days).

I can sympathise wholeheartedly.
Mine wasn't a bite by a creature from Alien though.
I had a vasectomy some years ago, pre-microsugery, you understand.
Anyway, the stitches came out on the right hand side and I got an infection.
Couldn't get me knees together for a week and any sudden movement made me feel sick.
When the surgeon was yanking the tubes out it was making my head nod.

A bit minor but quite stupid:

I was removing the body of my ex-military Sankey trailer because it was utterley rotten and the floor was replaced with ply by the previous owner so the original steel sides were supported by hopes and dreams (well, mastic and dirt). The floor had coachbolts through it to brackets on the chassis, the easiest way to remove them was bolt cutters which I duly did and then tipped the body off onto the floor. I then proceeded to kick it into pieces (it was *that* rotten), however cropped bolts are very pointy and on the third hard kick one went through my boot, sock and foot. It's ok though, the bone stopped it. A few plasters and a sit down and I carried on, with a hammer this time...

Thought this was the most relevant place to post this as it's probably not worth its own thread. Was just searching google images for welding carts for a bit of inspiration. And came across this image is it just me or is that cylinder a NASTY ACCIDENT waiting to happen. The position of that valve looks in a very vulnerable place, and is just waiting to be sheared off.

Ive never had any real nasties myself,but plenty of close shaves!

Ive worked in the glass industry for the past 10 years and when an 8x4' sheet of glass disintegrates when you're handling it ur bum twitches a little,a friend of mine and i were working on a scaffold doing many small repairs on a block of flats refurbishment a few years ago and it was a breezy day but nothing bad,i was working about 10 feet away from him and i heard him say say ouch! (say not shout) and i looked to see him with a 10" shard of 4mm float glass through his forearm after trying a half sheet blowing over,this shard had gome between the two bones in his forearm and cut one of the tendons and was sticking an inch out of the other side! so off to the local A&E it was,he said it happened before he realised it hurt!

he was off for 2 months after being stitched up....nice!

Speaking of glass, have a look at this pair of goons i snapped today from our site sticking film over a smashed pane of glass. Judging by the extent of the dents to the top of the van, this is their regular method of high-level access.
HSE's office is just round the corner.....

Before the picture was taken he was standing on the top of the glass rack which is mounted on the side of the van to get up there. He obviously decided that was far too dangerous!
