Good that your all right, but slicing the tendon wouldnt have been the end of it.
My father in law is a bit dangerous near tools n sharp objects, and he found a bayonette in his house in france when tidying out the loft. So I showed him how to put a good edge on it on a slipstone we found too, and check the edge on paper till it cut clean and told him not to use it for diy etc as it would be too bloody sharp.
He spent all night sharpening it and about 9pm they decide to have some supper. Oysters, no oyster gloves, handy uber sharp ww1 bayonette... Yeah, you know what comes next...
Uber sharp ww1 bayonette stabbed into left hand between middle and forefinger when oyster pops open unexpectedly whilst full force is pushing blade in, severed two tendons inside the hand itself as the point went down into the palm. Surgeons reconnected the severed tendons, and he had to have physio for a year to recover the movement and make things bend properly. But today he's got it all back...

Lesson learnt, by me! keep him away from sharp objects, some people cant be trusted even with warnings...

My Father-in-law was a fitter at a local factory. One day he was trying to wrestle a piece of steel out of the rack when another sheet which had been badly put back fell and hit him on the back of his hand, cutting it badly. He knew he'd done some serious damage so off he went to casualty. They took one look and said, no probs, we'll just close the wound and send you on your merry way. No, he says, I think you'd better take another look. They looked a bit closer and I think it was 2 or 3 tendons he'd severed. He's got about half the strength in his hand that he used to have but at least it's useable. I was lucky when I damaged my hand, I only ripped the skin back exposing the tendons. Even though I was in lots of pain I couldn't resist showing people the tendons moving as I wiggled my fingers . I wish I had the photos they took at the hospital. The most painful part of the whole thing was when they washed it in hot water with Iodine, I went into mild shock. Oh and the worst part of all?? I was training someone at the time luckily I'd sent him off for a break .

Actually, I've had very little pain with this apart from when the nurse tried to cut off my wedding ring with some antiquated serrated wheel turned by hand against a bar. Agony. I fought her off and managed to remove the ring myself with a little KY. Oddly my fingers haven't swelled at all and I was up and out of the hospital within a few hours of coming round, I put it down to dosing myself with arnica and am hoping the hypericum will help get the nerves to reattach fully (I severed the one that goes up the inside of the ring and middle fingers - which I presume the micro-surgeon repaired but there's no telling as it was like a mad house in there and no-one had time to tell me anything).
Still glad I didn't sever tendons Fluffy...a year to repair!! I need to be back working in a week! (oh alright - two then)

A fella i've mentioned in another thread (SUYGarage), re boilertubes and WW2 steamships - W.Thompson esq, had a 3 tonne boat fall on his wrist some years ago. He was working on it and had omitted to do up one bolt on the cradle, it slipped etc etc.
The ambulance men arrived, he instructed them and the others around on how to lift the boat off, then, cradling his hand, tried to walk to the ambulance. The ambulance men of course, made him get into a stretcher.

At the hospital, after a few x rays of the extremely crushed wrist, the surgeon asked him if he smoked (he was over 70). When he answered that he never had, the surgeon said he wouldn't remove the hand then (!)

He still has the hand but it's pretty useless - he can put things in it but it's got very little grip, which for a man who's used tools all his life is a bit of a bugger, but it doesn't stop him.

Next week, when Drainetta comes back from her sojourn at the National Theatre, I shall get her to tell you all how she had her thumb ripped off by a horse....

I think the worst accident I know of at work was a few years ago when a fitter was doing some work on an air operated saw. The one he was used to working on exhausted all the air once the safety gate was opened but unfortunately this particular one didn't. I gather he undid the air connector on one end of the unit and the cylinder, being still full of air from the other end, activated and the mechanism trapped him by his neck. The guys working the machine went for a break while it was down so no-one realised he was in there for a while. When he was found, he was slipping in and out of consciousness. His jaw was smashed and he'd crushed his larynx but he's pretty much ok now, though his jaw has some nasty scars.

I've been wondering about him too. Hopefully he's busy sorting out that Suzuki jeep he found. Or he's got a decent job that pays him more than 3 shillings and sixpence an hour!

Thank you my friend! Good to be back. Shall be here for a while till I can get working again - although I have managed to complete one annoying job with my one good hand, attaching a set of wheels to an old plastic bath (one I use for washing moulds). I was all set to cut some wheels from an old folding pushchair frame and weld them to plates to bolt to the ply base I had mastic'd to the bath before The Accident. I just wanted to get the bath wheeling and tools put away, so I stood and looked at it for a while then came up with the best, quickest and easiest solution, drilled holes in the ply and cable tied the whole frame to the bath - all one handed . Not only works a treat but if I decide to re-cycle the pushchair elsewhere, all I have to do is cut the cables and voilá! a little fabric and it's ready for baby

You really are a master or mistress of recycling ratty, Its amazing how good you get with one hand I chopped some tendons in my thumb a few years back, despite being under strict instructions not to use it i soon got a dab hand pardon the pun, at carrying out many tasks, includeing welding.

Probably like a lot of the welders on here, i have the ability to pick up very hot things with bare hands. Like when the missus asks me to get something out of the oven so you lift a red hot dish out with no gloves and don't feel it.

One of the lads had cut some slots out of a piece of 25mm plate ready for me to weld it onto something. He shouts me that its done so i walked over and picked it up. Now stuff just come off the mill aint normally hot due to the amount of coolant used. I picked it up, walked 5 paces and the heat hit me. He had done it with no coolant and it was red hot. Have lovely white/red burn on my palm which is now peeling. Sleep? err no. Angry? err yes.

Yes, and if that wasnt bad enough, once it was welded up i had to spray the b*starding thing.
