Do you have non-return valves on the tank or are they quick release fittings? For the flow in the side>> out the top to work you would need non returns

Why? How do you get flow at the end if it doesn't flow through the tank?

I've assumed the vertical pipe to the left of the clock goes down to the bottom horizontal pipe, if it doesn't then you can ignore my post.

Looking at it now I guess that vertical goes to a drain point

That's fine, yep that is a drain at the bottom of the vertical pipe.

LOL. It's like Chinese whispers, the more you explain it the less I understand!

I think armalites is referring to pipe "B" and "the vertical pipe" could mean any of them!

What I am not understanding now is that if "the vertical pipe" (B??) is a drain, why does it appear to sneak off somewhere else as circled above?

That is the dryer system to knock out water, A, B, D all go to the drain but all have a valve before the drain. See the Tee at B, idea is water drops out to the bottom.and dryer air goes over to C. C to D again does the same as B. It is like the pic attached.
