New Compressor

Is it ok to ask this (please don't laugh)

Do i have a female connection at the compressor end
Then a male 3/8 that is fitted to a 3/8 hose
Then a 3/8 female on the end of the hose in order to run standard size compressor tools.

Cos as you can tell i don't have doooly squat of an idea and the compressor arrives in the next couple of days.
I still need to order the componants.... i have been looking but its a minfield.

When you buy a 3/8 BSP fitting that determines the thread size. If you're talking about quick release fittings you fit the female (socket) to the tank and the plug (male) fits that. The plug to fit the socket is ordered by hose bore size, so you could order a 3/8 socket for the tank and a 10mm plug to fit the socket and then connect to a 10mm bore hose. (10mm is for example).

You will then need a socket fitted with a 10mm hose tail at the remote end of the pipe. Most air tools have a 1/4 BSP fitting, if so you will fit a 1/4 BSP plug to the tool.

The connection between the plug & socket is independent of thread & hose sizes.

There are different types of plug & socket, obviously you need to get them all of the same type (PCL Schrader or whatever).

I just to be sure befoe i commit and pay online otherwise iv'e got all the ag of exchanging.

have a nosey down to machine mart if theres one near u . they keep all the pcl fittings and short whiptails look them over and either buy them there or u can use internet once u know what u looking for if its cheaper i use highflow fittings as well as pcl . and c couplings and use 3/4 hose with the c type u can see the difrence in size of sockets and plugs on the y piece hose i think pcl fittings will do u fine unless u use a lot of air

no u end up with less as it restricts the volume of air required by the tools , larger bore = more cfm and a slower velocity of air traveling down the pipe . it also gives better cooling small bore pipe restricts airflow to tools and they run slow

R ok thank you.

So my compressor should run better on a 3/8 hose as im told the fittings should be 3/8.
Its only a small petrol compressor but i want tot get it right.

The only time i get to learn this stuff is when im not at work and not in me shed working on the car bits so i apprecieate all the advice your giving.

Not necessarily. As I said, you choose 3\8 fitting to fit the tank, you can get 3/8 fittings to fit a variety of hose sizes. If you are planning using an impact wrench and/or a long length of hose go for 1/2 inch bore

This is what screw onto the threaded tap on the compressor.

It seems a bit small to me.

Its smaller that the fittings i had on a cheap old compressor that i bought from b&q a few years ago.
The new fitting is at the bottom of the pic.


I measured the fitting as best as i could.

Like i said once you have ordered the bits it a pain returning the parts and time wasted.

Looking at the male end of the compressor fitting it looks to me that the internal diameter of the hose should be 6mm, does this mean i need a 10mm hoses and 1/4" fittings?

to determine the thread you've got on the compressor.

Once you know that then you need a female hose tail with the same thread to screw onto the tap. You should be able to get a range of hose sizes for a given thread size.

I would suggest 10mm hose minimum, so if your tap is 3/8 bsp then get a 3/8bsp - 10mm hose tail.

To make things a bit more complicated, hosetails with female threads aren't as common as those with male threads, so you may need an adaptor to change the male tap thread to female.

The hose tail you show in your photo looks like it has a coned end and it will not be suitable for the tap.

Hose is usually measured by the bore size (internal).
