New Progress no.1 Refurb

Been beavering away getting this thing prepped for paint. Took all the parts down to bare metal using a flap disc. Looks like it's had at least a couple of coats of paint since it was made, and it was covered in a thick layer of filler or high build primer to smooth things out. I might reapply filler to smooth things off a bit.

Also stripped the motor, cleaned and rebuilt. The bearings were nasty and felt very notchy. Now they're running nice and smooth. A small amount of play but not enough to warrant replacement.

I bought new bearings for the spindle at a cost of £50. Annoying because that's more than what I paid for the drill! I'll probably only replace them if they need it, otherwise they're getting cleaned and regressed.

If it were me, having got the new bearings, I'd replace the old ones anyway - then you'll be good for another lifetime.

Were you able to get the pulley off the shaft OK? Mine seems to be seized on.

Mine was very stiff. Check for 2 grub screws in the same hole(s), sometimes a 2nd one is used to lock the first. I needed quite a bit of heat too.

What did you use to clean the windings and fan? It came up a treat.

The shaft is keyed but the pulley isn't. It's held on with a grub screw. Don't know what idiot did that as it's ruined the keyway. The pulley came off quite easy, but that's probably because it's quite a loose fit. Have you tried heating yours with a blow torch? You could also try to press it out.

I used compressed air to clean it. Luckily it was all dust and dirt and no real gooey crap.

Motor painted hammerite satin black.

Started applying body filler, followed by sanding and etch primer.

High build primer. Will probably follow it up with more sanding and more fillering etc. I want that paint looking like glass.

Media blasted and etch primed. Blasting media gets everywhere!

Still got more fillering and sanding to do, and I reckon I'm half way done. Still can't decide what colour to go with though... A little help?

Sorry but you applied filler then etch primer? The etch primer is to give the filler more bond to the cast iron. I can't see much of a benefit in applying it to filler.

sounds good ,what you are doing is correct as far as i am concerned , is this item to be used daily or mainly just for show ,i restore items and go over the top on a lot of occasions , if you are going to be using it be aware that it will chip very easily because of the build up of filler ,etch ,primer paint etc but will look awsome. i too apply a n etch/ wash primer over filler before high build primer as it was recomended when i used to be in the motor trade back in the late 80s ,havnt had any problems with adhesion as long as you make sure everything is cleaned with panel wipe and 2 cloths before applying further top coats ie after flatting and before glossing, cant wait too see finish pics.

Stuff and nonsense!

Fobco drills were either cream or turquoise. Wolf equipment was bright red. Viceroy machines were hammer effect metallic green and blue. Whatever colour feels good to you, do that.

Etch first, followed by filler. Good spot

It will be for light use. I just wanted to make it look nice. It would have bugged the hell out of me if I had just painted it and it still looked like crap.
I'll be using tekaloid enamel paint, hopefully this is tough enough to prevent chipping.

So back to paint choice... I was considering cream or red. Maybe both? Maybe a bit of black? I need some inspiration. Anyone got pics of machines that aren't painted grey?

Gloss enamel. A cheap $2 tin for the black and PPG White Knight epoxy enamel for the green. The black is really bad though, not much adherence, keep meaning to redo it.

Battleship or dark pigeon grey .. almost the same colour as the older MEM electrical switch boxes

I painted my pollard duck egg blue, looks quite good. I use standard ‘gloss paint’ thinned with 10% 2k activator and apply by brush. Goes off rock hard, much faster than when you thin with turps etc. I’ll get a picture later.

Neighbours must love you even more now at least the reliable Porsche has gone
