Well I won the Briggs and Stratton militarised engine on ebay and picked it up yesterday. Being ex military it is in good nick and seems to have had little use. It has a 5in pulley on it which incorporates a clutch which at idle disengages. The pulley might be too big at full throttle. I have just ordered a digital tacho to check the speed at max and see where I go from there.

Sounds good, I've always had a high regard for B & S engines, you shouldn't have any problems.

keep a eye on the tappet clearances they close up causing starting problems
Sorry to back track but has anybody had any thoughts on what the third valve in the pipework is/was as I now have a selection of engines/motors and would like to start thinking of getting it to work before I start tidying the paint etc. I have reloaded the photos I previously used when I first started the thread to refresh your memories.

I still can't think of anything other than a safety (blow-off) valve that shouldn't need to be there anyway and that was leaking so got bodged up to reduce the leakage.
Nothing has sprung to mind since I thought of this back at post 15 http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/threads/new-project-compressor.50470/#post-572339 - I just can't think of anything else that would have been fitted there, and it looks like a relief valve to me.
