Newbie now with TIG.

Dazza,
Once I get the call that the plug & socket for the switch have arrived .........
As my bench legs are 2 x 2 2 box I'm thinking of attaching one of the big welding jig magnets to the die cast case of the pedal so I can use my knee to operate the switch rather than have a large knee bashing clamp to contend with as well.
Could you work with that idea ?

When i said clamp to the bench i meant the work piece it was sliding all over the place.

I don't know if clamping pedal would work i'm moving all over the place getting the best angle ect especially if the work piece is clamped to the corner of the table i move the pedal and have ago at the other side rather than clamping again.

Cleaned things up a bit better today, Hopefully the welding will improve also.

The tacking went ok at 80amp, back town to 65 for the rest. The toe into the 4mm was not good so i zipped along it again without filler.

Maybe. I think i needed more amps and a faster travel speed.

What about the sides 4mm to 4mm. 120amps and 1.6mm filler?

Yeah 100-120 with a 1.6 filler would be a nice place to start. Work towards the corner (tube) to ensure your angle of attack is pointing the correct way in the corner and Its always nicer not pushing heat to an open edge.
One side this will be easier than the other. You can either weld it with your non dominant hand (difficult if you've not practiced) or rotate it so that your welding it from the back.

I dread to think how bad i would be with my other had i can hardly stick things together with my dominant hand.

Then you will have to weld from over the top of the vertical with the joint facing away from you. I personally wouldn't entertain starting in a corner like than unless you had no choice because in reality there would be no way you could do it without dragging the first inch.

I had to get the SLR out as the pictures looked even worse on the phone. I did feel i got better as i went along, but the images are muddled now.

Should have got the mig out.

Too cold Daz. Believe it or current on welders is far from equal. My fronius would of done that lovely at 100 amps yet my old kemppi was always on the lighter side and would of needed 120 plus. That looks like it needed a chunk more current

Your also filling when you don't need to. Keep things consistent. You need to practice on plate mate. There is no point moving onto joints and projects until you have the simplest thing mastered to perfection.

I thought i was ok on plate, maybe even a butt joint . Only ever done a couple of fillets though.

The father in law is in the US so i'm thinking about buying one of these Unless someone knows of a cheaper alternative or cheaper supplier.

That's where they are made.
I used to have a ck 20. It's a nice torch.

Some more quality welds today .

130 amps dab drag dag drag. I had a good run for about 2cms .

Warped it a bit but don't think its going to fall apart.

I think you're arc length is too long and you're possibly contaminating the tungsten resulting in the brownish soot.

Are you using a decent mask?
