When I took my life insurance I had the usual questions. Always been a non smoker. The girl said they are allowed to ask for results at PM to see if you were or not and if you lied they wouldn’t pay.

She may have just been repeating what she was told but it wouldn’t surprise me.

Can’t say I’m bothered to be honest. I did a bit for the feds and they bought my work gear so yeah, the police know my inside leg measurements

I remember when the genome was cracked, the news led with 'Insurance companies will use the data to see if you have markers for a disease and not cover you!'
If there is a doubt, tell them and get it in writing. Don't take out a policy and lie on it

If the money goes toward the upkeep of the NHS I'm all for it but it probably goes towards decorating the flat at No9. It all sounds a bit political to me, lock the thread somebody.

The police need to know if someone has a condition that prevents them from driving which seems to happen quite a lot according to the plethora of programmes you see on tv nowadays.

As far as records being shared, I have a Seaman’s Medical every year. The doctor who does it relies on my honesty as he cannot access my records. It’s says so on the form and he has told me this.

The thing that amazes me is half the ***** who propagate this ****e have loyalty cards and a mobile phone.

In my opinion, the only good reason to opt out is to reduce the amount of data floating about in different institutions that are potentially vulnerable to hack/leak.

All that being said, I feel that by the time whatever anonymous-ing has been done, doubt the value-difficulty ratio for NHS data is particularly high.

So they might sell the data to life insurance companies....the insurance companies already obtain data about you when you fill in all the forms - so that they can calculate the risks - but its a very broad-brush approach. They can already say with a high degree of certainty that people who smoke, live in Dirtytown and were born within a specific time period will on average die ten years earlier than someone who doesn't smoke, lives in Cleanville and was born in a different time period. If the day comes when it becomes economically viable to test people's genome sequence at an individual level, then it's reasonably clear that some possibilities arise.

If they identify you as someone from Dirtytown who smokes, then your premiums might rise, equally if they identify you as someone who carries a gene that might result in a shorter life expectancy, your life insurance premiums might rise. The upside might be that having had your genome identified, you might be able to change your lifestyle (stop smoking for example) and live longer - especially if you then receive earlier treatment for a condition that you might not have been aware of.

At some point in the future, the cost of genome sequencing will be factored into your premiums, and at that point the insurance companies are unlikely to want to pay for a copy of your medical records - or flip it round and you could have a situation where an insurance company offers you potentially cheaper insurance if you provide a copy of your medical records...

Each to their own, I'm opting out. I don't trust Boris and his chums or the companies they will share data with irrespective of the assurances given. I guess the acid test will be if people start getting targeted marketing for maladies only listed in your medical records. If opting out means I don't get a phone call asking if I've tried a particular pile ointment then that's worth the effort. Doh! I've just shared some of my medical records, good job I didn't mention the crabs, halitosis and the embarrassing trip to A&E with the hoover and hamster - doh, I've done it again.
