And those that don’t have an email address? Obviously that policy pertains to all on this forum, but there are exceptions out there.

Then use a mobile number - you don't need to give them an email address to use the online service or the reminders - this looks like a solution where people are looking for problems. If Scottish islands can be provided with fibre or microwave / satellite internet connections, it's pretty much just the refusnik/luddites amongst the population that can't see the benefit to them in moving with the times.

Well all I can say is that over the years I've used .gov online services I've never had the email address or mobile number sold on - and I use unique addresses and numbers so if it happened, I'd know the exact source.

Other than that, enjoy the aroma of the post office queue....

Yes, I have a mobile number - but it is not for use (and likely/possible sale - like email addresses) by lots of ‘contacts’ that I don’t want contacting me.

Seems, already, that this thread has been instigated by someone who hasn’t actually read the detail before jumping to conclusions? I am expecting there was a paper reminder in this case, but likely ignored. Anyway, there is a ‘grace period‘ (of perhaps a fortnight?) for re-taxing the vehicle - as long as that actually happens (and the taxation periods are continuous).

There was NO V11 received.
The "grace period" is a myth.

I just tried to sign up and it got to the section where it wants a passport number and it doesn't give any option not to have a passport Knackered after that.

I've just bought another car, it took me less than a minute to tax it, no finding somewhere to park (or trudging through the rain), no standing in a queue waiting for someone to decide if they want first or second class postage to send a parcel to Nigeria - and fill in the customs declaration, no having to wipe your debit card on a sleeve because the card reader 'doesn't always work properly', no getting to the front of the queue to suddenly find the three staff are now just one as two of them go on their dinner break.....

It ******* well is not. I bought my car on Sunday and after numerous problems sorting out insurance I had to drive off from the shut dealerships locked gate carpark to come home and only after 30 mins did I remember the tax still to be done. Pulled over at services and attempted it. The first time it gave up when returning from the card payment 2sv page. The next few times it threw an error saying it couldnt be done online. I checked, waited and checked again that it still showed as untaxed... and hadn't recieved the extortionate £290 charge on my card notifications... Eventually I had to swap browser to one with clean history to get it to go through.

£290 for a relatively clean 2L petrol!! Yet a slightly newer and far dirtier diesel goes for £30
And how do they make this newer diesel appear slightly cleaner, you might ask? They have reduced the compression ratio to the same as the petrol version, 14:1.. also making the mpg far worse, but "its cleaner", whilst using more diesel for the same journey as the old one...

i prefer an open payment system instead of digital by default

I kinda enjoy going down to the post office and paying for the road tax there

a, im keeping someone in a job
b, its someone to talk too
c, i get to shop around and see if theres other things of interest for my partner or my children

to be honest theres no need to supply dvla with more info than just an address if users want to give there email address thats fine for them

as goes for telephone number for texts i cant see the need for them to have it unless they intend to inform you of fines by contacting you over the phone otherwise its a collection of data to be shared with anyone that includes the police who then think they have a right to contact you when they see fit or when they think they have an excuse to contact you.

dont forget all this data can be shared with debt companies and dvla is one collection point they do use

Many of us have more than one vehicle to tax, many other forms to fill and boxes to tick. Its just more to remember and muddle the grey matter.

I thought they should put it on fuel. Every vehicle needs fuel, so no untaxed vehicles. Use the vehicles more pay more - use the vehicles less pay less

Agree completely. Penalises less economical cars then too. The current outdated system is a nonsense.
