yes it will. i have access to large amounts of transformer oil )pcb free) that has been removed from HV switch gear as its starting to degrade but will cope with far in excess of LV

Could anyone please tell me where I can get some diala oil ... Just purchased a pickhill arc ( bantam) got it home only to find hardly any oil inside ... I'm in Leigh , Wigan ... Thanks for any help received

Lovely old boxes. I had the use of an old oil-cooled Oxford single/3-ph arc machine and when the works shut down I had my eye on it. I wasn't going to nick it, saw the accountant and agreed to pay a few quid for it. Went to collect it and it had gone - purloined by the fecking foreman.

I have an old Pickhill Bantum 180A, worried about PCBs so I phoned Pickhill Engineering, it went like this..

I'm not really sure I bought into the 'negligible' idea, maybe negligible for her up 200 miles away in Thirst or where ever! I'm just going to carry on welding with it half full and when it really needs filling up I'm going to get all masked and suited and tip it into a container, take it to the local the local domestic recycling centre and declare it to them? Dont see what else can you do?

there only half filled anyhow as when u drop the transformer in it the height increases i think everyone is making a big deal over pcb in oil . its contained and even i f a bit leaked out and u had it on your hands its not going to harm u unless u were in contact with it evey day and u would wash it off as soon as possible anyhow. my welders 45 years old and im not bothered wether it has pcb or it hast none has ever leaked out of it and the oil is still clean as in an earler post

I was in contact with it every day in one form or other and it can travel through normal rubber gloves apparently, not that we wore any, the polar bears have probably never seen any transformer oil but they are probably going to be wiped out by it with the amount of seal bluber they eat, the seals got it from the fish who got it from the sea because it seeped into the rivers etc

Virtually all veg oils are more than combustible enough to be used as an alternative to DERV in most older diesel engines. Rudolf Diesel's original design was based on veg oil consumption so that subsistence farmers could 'put aside' a field or two to grow ground nuts (peanuts) as a source for the oil so they weren't reliant on the increasingly huge petrochemical conglomerates. I've even used it to boost the heat in a wood fire inside a fire bucket!

Many years ago, I had a 1973 MGBGTV8 and was into old Bs at the time. I was heading home from something down South and stopped for fuel at a Lancaster Forton northbound on the M6 (and a good few other places!). There was a BGT at another pump and I noticed he was filling it with diesel - might even have been separate pumps in those days. I rushed over to warn him and he proudly showed me his B series diesel conversion!
I tried hard to say something positive, but failed. Particularly when he proudly told me it could do nearly 30 to the gallon. To be fair, I think diesel was a good bit cheaper then.

Even back then, there were better diesels around, but needs must and if you have a B-series lump and a B-series hole, well, hmm...
Otoh, I have an old Scimitar and I simply can't afford to run it as a daily driver with the inefficient Essex in it, so when it goes back on the road I'll have a modern diesel under the bonnet. It won't be any slower than original, either.
