Virtually all veg oils are more than combustible enough to be used as an alternative to DERV in most older diesel engines. Rudolf Diesel's original design was based on veg oil consumption so that subsistence farmers could 'put aside' a field or two to grow ground nuts (peanuts) as a source for the oil so they weren't reliant on the increasingly huge petrochemical conglomerates. I've even used it to boost the heat in a wood fire inside a fire bucket!

Ithought Diesel's original ideas were based on coal dust as a fuel.??

Across the fen, therevwas a guy thatvdid a lot of work for the Bressingham Steam Museum. I happened to be there when he had his Jag mk10 on the hoist. Engine was a Gardiner...and another local bloke had a diesel engined Ford Zodiac.. lota smoke and knock..this was cerca 1972

Many experiments were, and still are, being made on powderised coal, but results have been patchy at best. The consensus is that more investment in completely different technology might bear fruit in the long run, but emissions and heavy 'coking' continue to be a problem. An external combustion engine seems preferable as the latest models of rotary steam piston engines are being touted as the way forward for steam technology. Currently anything that can be burnt in a liquid form - from LPG to veg oil (used or fresh) or even old sump oil have shown surprisingly high efficiencies - tens of % higher than any infernal combustion engines. With 'cold' to full operating temperatures being achievable in well under a minute using simple heat exchangers/burners what's to not like?
