Old battery charger fuse

I was given an old British made battery charger but it doesn't work. There are 2 old looking fuses in the front I want to change but can't find direct replacements. Would it be easy to replace with modern fuses?

You don't actually replace those bits - you wind fuse wire around the pins!

So does the plastic bit pop off the top? I can't see any fuse wire.

you wind the pins out push fuse wire though the plastic bit screw pins back in
have you replaced the fuse in the mains plug first as a starting point

top may flip off or holes through the end could be either picture of end would be good

I wondered why the pins screwed out. No I haven't changed the plug fuse yet. Thanks for the reminder I'll try it now.

I can't find any 3 amp or 4 amp fuse wire online would 5 amp be OK on those?

The 3A is on the input/voltage selector side and the 4A on the output to the battery?

It would be useful to see the legend behind the 4A fuse.

Perhaps one is on the secondary of the transformer and the other on the output as you say, the latter will blow if the battery is connected the wrong way round and the former if there is a short somewhere.

Before you rip those fuses to bits, check the plug fuse.
Then check the 2 fuses with a multi-meter.
The brass pins may wind out, or twist and pull. Then it is a case or re wiring the blown wire.
One looks like the end is open to allow re wires.
Some older chargers needed a load over the o/p to allow a current flow.
So after testing the fuses, and charger cables connect a battery and see how that goes.
Those fuses used to be available from EX MOD sales and/or your local radio Ham club.

My Dad had one of those exact same chargers back in the 1970's. When working it used to buzz like heck.

Changed the plug fuse and still no life how would I test the fuses with a multimeter? Here is a pic of mine.

Thanks to yellow arvark I figured out how to do a continuity test on the fuses and it's the 3 amp that's a gunner. No does anyone know where to get 3 amp fuse wire? All I have is 5 amp!

Anywhere that sells electrical items,usually comes on a card and even some corner newsagents/grocers shops sell it.

Yeah an old style hardware / ironmongery shop would have it.

I think some of the more rural DIY sheds keep it as well.

Has it blown the 3 amp or is it just not connecting. I'd put a piece of 5 in just to test it and then most likely forget all about it I've just checked ours and it's 5,15 and 30.

B&Q do a cardboard bundle of fuse wire. Cheep as well
try with 3amp then move up.
