Lots of good options out there but nothing I have tried comes close to the Crystal for clarity of seeing the weld and surrounding area.Hi Chaps, First post here, I'm a blind as bat hobby welder of 35 or so years and have decided it's time to get a an auto lid. This Optrel 2.0 sounds like the dogs XXXXXXX and just what I need but out of my price range right now. I have read some reviews about a poor relative in that it is supposed to be true colour, the GYS Alien. Does anyone know if it is anywhere near being close to the clarity of vision as the Optrel Crystal 2.0 ? I should add that I am colour blind too ! So it really is just about seeing what the hell is going on with the puddle and staying on track. Thanks

A decent relatively cheap lid I have had in the past is the Weldability Phantom XL so might be worth a look. The red/flame graphics is not the best but when you have it on you don't see the outside anyway
Best bet is if you can go to a local dealer and try on a few different ones, obviously you won't be able to tell how it is on the arc but at least you will be able to see what it is like in the light state.
I'd propose that the GYS is a rebadged version of this helmet, the IFL WH9801:

The specification for the lens is the same, as is the shape of the helmet itself. GYS Also to do a helmet called the Spavceview and other members on here have suggested that its also the same in the past. I've got the IFL and it's superb for the money, I use it as a spare/visitor helmet and use it from to time at work. The viewing area is huge even compared to helmets at several times the price.
Hi Mate, just had quick look at link, thanks but it doesn't mention the "Tru Colour" aspect like the Alien, I have also just discovered that it is also badged as the Alien by TOOL IT too. It seems the true colour technology does improve the overall clarity of vision when the arc is struck too not just in the light state ? Hopefully there will be someone on here who has had both and can compare.
Ah ok, was wondering why you were telling me to look at the Hipsters post
