Over head flxible grinder help

Hi I've got a very old over head flexible grinder I've stripped the motor cleaned it all out,brushes look good , I think if I remember it's called biflex and made in Manchester to me it could be 1940/60 it's old ,anyway I got it running sounds sweet untill I connet the flexishaft then it sounds bad I think it's knackered, it's about 1" thick I can post some pics and I would like to get a new flex or have mine repaired I can't seem to find much on the net about these so I was wondering if any one on here can help me out with some old school knolage,I wanted to use it to port a pinto cylinder head I'm gutted I can't use it,thanks in advance,Tom

There's a plate on it hard to read but I think it says BIFLEX B.C MORRIS LTD BIRMINGHAM

Well, I can't help with your machine but the last Pinto head I did, (pics to follow) I did with a die grinder. I too had a flex shaft like machine very similar to yours but the bearings were shot, I scrounged a die grinder and some burrs and stones. I would not do another. Had my last one X rayed at a place in Stockton where a friend worked just to be on the safe side. Had the use of a Superflow 110 at the time too.

We used a similar machine called "Morris Flex"
Did the job very well
I broke though many cooper S head castings with it lol

If it's the inner then you might have too Google flex drive cable or think car speedo cable (looks much the same) but much larger. It will be the ends that you may have trouble getting. Maybe reuse the original ends ?

I can do the head with a die grinder ,but I want to get this machine up and running I've been after one of these for years,the motor and the bearings are like new, there seams to be loads of these type machines on a site called INDIAMART but there's lot of bad feed back about them

No I havnt the shaft sounds like a propshaft on lose bolts

Hi Mike what with the rotation it looks like it can have a gear change by fixing the shaft on the geared end ,I did think it has to run clockwise otherwise it would try unwinding it self ,I switched the live and neutral, running it without the shaft sounds roll Royce

I don't know if I can post this link,this was my mk2 I built everythink ally inlet manifold I ported the head ,I had big valves and bronze guides fitted , this was the shake down run

That's how they sound, just rebuilt my Woolf frexi grinder from the 50/60 an FF2 the shaft sounds like a metallic bee in a tin, my problem was bearings in the handle,
The Indian version is Ralli Woolf.
You can only run them one way on my machine or the shaft will unscrew from the handle/Chuck assembly, the shaft should unscrew from the flange.

I did wonder if they sound like that,in one of the pictures I posted you can see the outer coil is split which is causing the inner to slide off the drive shaft ,if I can buy a new flex shaft I would if not I might try repair the one I got, thanks for the replys

I have 2 spare collet holder/handled no outer drive cable but one inner, picked up over the years, the inner are coaxial wound in opposite directions to help stop wind up when cutting
The outer appears to be soldered onto the end fittings.
I think the Ralli shaft is about £55 I seem to remember seeing, seems To cheap paid a lot more for my original Wolf one in the 70s.

Luckily my problem was worn handle bearings x 3 not the outer and finding how it all came to bits all 3 handles are slightly different design the center flex shaft is LH thread into the handle solid shaft & is 375th. dia.

I think I have a look at the handle ,I ran the motor and it sounded lovley then I put the flex on ran it up and it did sound pretty bad I was gutted,I want to use it for the touqe with a descent burr I bet it's like a chain saw

The reason for the new bearings were cutter, chatter not noise if the outer is damaged it is not going to end well.you have greased the shaft

I havnt grease the shaft ,it does look dry I'm going to strip the shaft tomorrow and have a look at the bearings,I wonder if it's possible to 're attach the outter

There are only bearings in handle you should be able to remove outer from handle.
The damage you show in #1 is not repairable I would Think.
Is that the shaft you are trying to use
I would look for another shaft or talk to S.S Whites as suggested by @mike 109444
I use a heavy Molly. Grease for flexi shaft
The flange unscrews from shaft.
The drive ends on the flexi are crimped on, I suppose you could cut off maybe shorten and with a lot of fiddling and uncertainty re crimp after expanding old crimped end
