I see you have never done any restoration work on rotten old vehicles yourself? If you had then you would know full well its pretty much impossible to provide anything other than a rough idea of cost, without actually starting the work and seeing whats involved.
The police wont get involved with your dispute, and if you have paid for the legal advice you have been given I suggest you ask for a refund, as it could mean a good deal of trouble for you if its followed.
I did a fair amount of this type of work in the past, and would give customers a ball park figure of the likely costs, but very often the final price would be quite a bit higher, but it it was going to be more, I would always contact customer and advise them of this, and ask them to come along and have a look at the reasons for higher cost.

Another factor, restoration places doing this stuff day in day out, one man band probably isnt, so potentially took him a lot more time.
I feel this may be a lesson to you, go with the speacilist who quoted you. Hes a soeacilist for a reason, probably busy too because hell be good, or wouldnt survive in buisness.

I would guess the reason OP went with small one band was due to him thinking it would be cheaper?

Too many variables to be able to accurately comment, but from the photos you don't know how much was involved.
But to me the gap between the sliding door and rear arch doesn't look right, so may have to spend time getting the panel gaps correct with the door first so you have a accurate reference when it comes to fitting the arch.

I suspect the title of your post 'over priced welders' on a welding forum was not the best wording to encourage a sympathetic response and would result in defensive replies, they were actually milder than I would have expected
Most of the members, myself included have had idiots expecting £100 of work for £10 and think they are doing you a favour paying you at all, after years of similar then we tend to get a bit

Once you are able to take photo's of the work, post them up and I am sure members will provide advice of what they think of the work and cost, though even with photo's it is unlikely any judgement or opinion can be very accurate because by the sounds of it we don't have a full set of pre work shots.

I have people coming to me for work who sometimes say X can do it for £50 (when I have suggested £100), and as they are obviously more interested in a cheap price than a good job, I always say get X to do the job then, and dont get involved........

Did you actually ask them to talk you through their price and how they came to that figure? they might have uncovered something previously unseen and fixed that too? And as no price was agreed and the brief I assume was to get the job done, they went ahead and did it. I know form working on a few vehicles that what appears to be a straightforward job rarely stops at the bit you can see before you start cutting and cleaning.
Before you go all Travis Bickle on them, I suggest a friendly conversation with a few polite questions, mention you had a few quotes beforehand and you were expecting to pay around X. Why therefore is the bill nearly double that? They may adjust the bill, or they may point out legitimate extra costs, or they may well tell you to fornicate elsewhere. My point is though, the best chance of success will be a sensible approach rather than walking in threatening legal action and arson.

If you have this many vehicles and you have only had your trousers took down once then you have been very lucky.
I charge well for welding work because the ordinary bloke in the street can't do it. He can go to halfords and buy a barney bodge it set up but the results will be goose ****. We get good money because it's a specialist thing
Take big bite of that **** sandwhich because I bet you won't get caught again

Well let's start by been honest you clearly ain't started this thread for any other reason than to gather opinions from welders about a welding price you ain't happy with.
Best way I can put it is to the point. It's your fault. Unless you have money to burn you gather a few quotations First and select the one you want. Never leave it as an open account always set a budget and TELL the garage your budget before they start. Tell them to call you if the unforeseen happens and the price needs addressing.
This situation could of easily been avoided had you been a little smarter about it. The pics are not gonna make a difference to me every business has a price structure and they are all different . Spot on, but worth remembering that when all said and done a so called "specialist" might have charged even more if there had been any unforeseen problems/issues!

I'm also surprised this hasn't been picked up yet.
Those other 3 quotes don't mean diddly.
You've said it your self you obtained them over the phone. Probably based on a brief description and possibly a photo at best.
You've rang round 3 garages in anger after getting the price off this one that's doing the work. They are not comparable quotes and shouldn't even be considered as the people quoting you could only base it on your description and that photo if you sent it.
Too many missing links in this story.
No welder worth there salt is gonna back you on this as they've probably come across the receiving end of this case and it's very easy for a non welder to underestimate the real costs and time involved in any welding job.

There are an awful lot of eggsucker numpties around nowadays, who always know better than those who might have 20-30 years experience of doing a particular job.................
