Well we had a few of em actually, they all went wrong eventually. The last one started running funny occasionally so we put it in the sale for £20.
I'd rather have a Chinese inverter... And I don't like them either cos I'm a snob

Actually it was the Chinese jasic inverter that really did it for the pickhill for us... Why bother with a huge lump of a welder that needs 16 amps minimum, when you could have a lunchbox that runs far more smoothly and easily?

Anyway sorry for off topic.. Yeah they're good machines when when working, far better than an air-cooled buzz box.

Love transformer welders me, we've got an inverter at work, wasn't cheap it's ok...

Big stupidly heavy transfo all day for me.

So i cleaned the top off & opened the oil plug, The oil level was about 4 or 5 mm above the max groove. Lovely golden clean oil...... but the top of the plug & or opening wasnt soo pretty!

So we lifted it out & left it draining, Lots of water sludge resting on most things :-(.
3 out of the 4 of the power supply terminals inside were loose & missing nuts. I found 1 nut sat snapped in half resting on the transformer. What would cause them all to brake / come undone ?? & where can i get new ones from ?

Little bit of pitting on the on off switch (thinking about rotating it 180')

Couple of questions please;
So are all these nuts & bolts Whitworth ?
How much oil does this thing take ?? (RT300)
I think im am going to drain out all the oil, run it through a sieve & muslin & try re-use it. (saw it priced £140 for 25L )
What's the best course of action with the parts not contained in oil ?, ive seen a utube vid where they've paint it red oxide above the oil line or just clean off & leave ?
(im not looking for a silk purse, just a usable welder....!)
The voltage selector knobs turns on the spindle, as the selecting lever doesnt lift up high enough to clear contacts ( just needs lifting on the rod by the looks of it)

I thought mine was yucky but yours is about the same from a yuckiness point of view

Mine is all imperial threads. The screws holding the lid on are 1/4" BSW, I haven't checked the brass screw terminals (mine had all its nuts fnarr fnarr) but I suspect they will be either BSW or BA - I will check them later and let you know. The missing terminal nuts could be in the very bottom of the tank, I found several insulating washers and some nuts etc. in the sludge in mine.

Cleaning up the switch plate is a pain - I was sorely tempted to take the welder outside and cover everything transformer and coil with polythene bags/sheet and then jetwash the remaining bits. It's still there in the back of my mind.....

It'll dry out fairly quickly at this time of year.

Oil is expensive, shopping round you may get it for under a hundred quid so having a go at filtering and re-using is a good idea. Mine will probably go back dry and I will get rid of the oil.

Terminals will be 0BA - I can't find my 0BA gauges but 0BA is pretty much interchangeable with M6 and M6 nuts and screws fit just fine on the terminals.

Even Stevie Wonder couldn't describe my oil as 'Golden' :-

Cut a hole above this dark line and decant into buckets. Filtering is an optional next step.

Worst case if u/s, copper's at £5/Kg, so that scrapped will buy you a Chinese inverter...

Well 32amp at 415v works out to 64amp on 240v= big cable, isolator switch and a 63amp blue plug/,socket.

It doesn't work like that, at the lower voltage the current will be lower as the whole thing will run at lower power.


How did you calculate 64A?

I've got a 250amp cytringan but I run it on 415v I've never tried it on 230v

Had a look at my cytringan plate and it's 380v 400v and 440v only. But my murex transtig 350 has a rating of 104 amps at 240v input so that would seriously dim the house lights.

I would high pressure hose the hell out of that.

The nuts will probably (?) Be imperial or metric, not whitworth.

Mine are imperial.

I reassembled mine and a few settings didn't work.

I wire brushed the mating face contacts and it all worked proper.

Just a thought.

Oxford 180 thingy.. Lovely, coming home soon.

I didn't change the oil, I separated the water by sucking it from the bottom in a translucent bucket, filtered the muck out, degreased and repainted.

Recycling...

Then returned the water free oil and topped up with any available oil to hand.
