That boat could be useful in areas like birmingham, or venice as it will be renamed if it rains to much more again. Its looking good

Cheers Darren & Paul. The paint job took far longer than i'd thought, not just cos of the rain, which went on and on and on, but also the huge surface which I had to cover again and again in various colours, with LOTS of cutting in. Theres light cream for the cabin sides, "Britannia Blue" for the hull upper, light grey for the cabin top, darker grey for the half deck, plus 3 lines of light blue on the rubbing strake, gunwhale and cabin edge. And all that with 2 or 3 coats. By brush.

Must admit if it was me i would be spraying it, and paul well he would be a long way away from the spray gun if he had his choice lol.

If it was indoors i'd have sprayed it, or if I had a HVLP i would have considered it. But there's over 300 squids of undercoat and top coat on there - add at least 20% for spraying, and that's when there's no wind (in Edinburgh, next to the Firth? - never!)
There's about a grands worth of paint altogether (at least), including coal tar epoxy, vinyl tar, primer, under and top coats, plus primer, under and eggshell inside, gloss on the hull internal, bilge paint, and that's not including 400 pounds worth of sprayfoam insulation. I'm skint. Anyone want to buy a boat?

Thats the problem with spray out doors the wind always messes it up. But i have to admit some of my best painted railings and gates have been painted out doors, but in lovely sunlight and an almost windless day.

Ho ho, Comedy boat builder i'm afraid. I started in 2002 - 14th Nov the cut plate turned up from Wales. It took me almost a week to haul it all down the yard and sort everything into convenient order. No forklift, no crane. 1/2 tonne plates.... you can imagine.
All the plating was done on my own, which meant jumping in and out of the boat with hammers and crowbars and chainpullers. The best bit of kit would be the LincolnArc 300A power source and Sterling wire feeder on 20m power/gas cables - could reach anywhere on the boat without moving the transformer. Brilliant.
I had no idea what I was letting myself in for, and no idea what it would cost or how long it would take me. Fool! But I don't regret it though.
If I had a crew of ten to build it, I could get the thing done, start to finish in under 3 months, fully fitted, easy. But on my own.... about 2.5 years of work! (though if I did it again i'd do it in 2/3rds of the time, or less)

I think thats the thing simon, once you have done something once, you work out loads of easy ways to do things. It would be interesting to total up all that you have spent on it and compare that with what it would have cost you to have the whole thing built. I bet there is a big difference, plus of course everything is the way you want it.
I did once fancy the idea of building a submarine, just to see if i could engineer the whole thing myself.

Si - your welding must be pretty **** hot after all that practice. There must be miles of weld on that. Inside and outside faces both fully welded?

Still on... but other bits of work keep looming and I can't afford to turn away cash money... but really Sept is the last time till next year, so she's going in, whatever state she's in
1/2 a mile of weld. Most of the plate is just welded from the outside (except where penetration was dodgy), but theres lots of stitching of frames. My weldings ok, but it aint MMA is it!
It would NOT be interesting to total up what i've spent!... it would be fearsome.... Although I can guarantee I could NEVER have been able to afford a boat like this, not no way no how. Just the bare, basic hull would be £30k+vat. And well over double that for a fairly basic fit out.
I'm not sure everything is the way I want it though - more like the way I could afford. There are lots of things I would have bought, but had to make, which isn't always best. There are specialists out there who have been making and designing the things I had to make and design off the top of my head/ from pictures/ looking at examples. And lots of things I had to scrimp on, or buy cheap. And you know what they say - "buy cheap, buy twice"!
I hope you've got enough displacement to support the total of all those plates!

Are you going to sell the fine vessel or do a moonlight flit sailing off into the moonlight?

Design displacement 17 tonnes. Theres about 10 tonnes of steel, 1/2 tonne of engine, 1 1/2 tonnes ply/wood/ bldg matls, another 1/2 tonne of batteries, genny, hot water tank. 750 ltr fuel tank, same of poo, tonne of fresh water, other stuff.... maybe 15 tonnes, plus ballast.
Plate, drawings, weldments, supplied as a "kit". I supplied all steel section and extra plate for tanks etc, and everything else.
She will be flogged when I find a buyer.... Interested Joe? 90K to you
