Painting the van camo

Well now i've got all i wanted to do on the welding side i thought why not start slapping some paint on,just to see how this stuff is


New outer wheel arch on(the inner was bad,really bad)
The grey you see is halfords etch primer,mainly because the arches were galv'd
So this new paint thats suppose to be brush roller and spray use,well,all i can say i'm not fully happy with that statement.
Its also suppose to be a primer undercoat top coat all in one with Anti corrosive zinc phosphate pigments blah blah blah
So with a drop of the thinners it came with i knocked some up and applied by brush,wow,was like trying to push tar,more thinners later.went with the roller,hummmmmmm,stuff seems to go off quick,but not super fast,but you cant brush it out and you've got to put a move on with the roller
Before you all ask yes i did tack cloth it down,heres the finish,(not the best of pics sorry,and also i'm outside under a green tarp to)


Now one thing is this,the stuff dont like that etch primer in fact as you roll it wont take hold its like your taking the paint back off

thats the etch grinning through can i add the etch was put on well before 24hrs before

So,asking you guys now, like why
One thing,its touch dry in under 30 mins and hard enough to rub your hand over it in an hour,got a gut feeling its spray only,not looking forward to doing this mainly because i'm outside under a tarp

1pac spray paint will always give issues as never seem to fully harden.

You would almost be worth using 2pack paint and a roller to cover better.

You may not get a ticket parked near a zebra crossing but you might get attacked by a lion escaped from a zoo!

Thats known a dazzel camo used during ww1 to make it harder to identify how big a ship was and what way it was going.

Iv used tractor enamel with a 4” foam roller it’s brilliant and lasts for ages

I also really miss my mk5 so much, my swb semi met her idol at the 50th anniversary of the transit a few years ago

Not buying no more paint,got 5lts of this stuff so thats what its getting.

So true but its also small stuff like the push rods designed to bend if the belt snapped and an engine that started 1st time everytime in minus 10 degrees unlike the York engine.

SO,i've got you lot a bit of an update,its been a busy 10 days or so,and this easter weekend has been a push
I'll go back to weekend before last and just say ones transit had more tin worm that was lurking in the dark areas than i hoped for,ie back underneath of the fuel tank,side door area etc etc,what ya get when you peel away what looks like good factory underseal,remember now,it is a ford
Got all that sorted,spent a lot of time waxing all cavity's etc and under sealing MOT was due on the 19th put it through on the 15th,PASSED with flying colours no advisory's nothing,well chuffed
Ok,back to what all this is about,painting
I had a bloody nightmare with the original stuff i got,may have said before brush and roller friendly it is not,horrid rubbish(have a dispute on evilbay with the company ATM)
Just to remind you all i'm brushing and rolling this on,i have no means to spray,well sort of,this paint was drying so fast you were best off throwing the tin over the van and hoping for the best,no matter how much i tried to thin it down it made no difference,even in the tray it formed a skin in 5 mins or less brushing,you got about 2 strokes and it was like tar,,the worse thing about the stuff is when it dried.
Heres a few pics and i'll explain why


See those marks,thats just by rubbing my hand over it(yes it was dry) thing is,they stayed there,no amount of a little wash/water would change it and the texture was like grit
yer before you all ask i did prep it all before hand,that blue you see is synthetic paint i put on some 6yrs ago,had to use 120 grit to get that off,that was just as bad,this rubbish was worse
So,after crying and swearing(erm more of the latter) one ordered some different paint,this

What a game changer brilliant stuff,let you read the spec ^^^^^^^,really brush and roller friendly well happy,what i did in the end was use the other paint as a base coat/primer/undercoat etc and went of with this,ok,still same colour olive drab but a slight different shade

Old stuff on the right,new on the left,plus blue dust
So the plan of action was use the 1st paint thinned down as a base and go over later with the new stuff of course making sure the under layer was dry 1st,but it worked so ones happy
Ok,enough said,heres what it all turned out like




I am well pleased with the finish,ok few bits not covered 100% perfect but for an on the drive out in the open in hot weather roller and brush,lets say no more,the roof was fun,had to do that at 7pm on easter sunday,waited till the sun got over a neighbours house
Just to add,the mirrors front valance and the other bit of plastic i sprayed on,i've only got one of those small touch up guns so was ideal for these
Hang on you all cry,CAMO,its just green,yer i know,heres the laugh,theres a toss up on what design to do, between me,her indoors 3 local neighbours guys who drive passed,even some kid on his bike made a comment,all on what colours and pattern i should go for,its been an interesting easter week end i can tell you
Right,quick rant,if you're going to get paint for a camo job dont get the 1st lot i posted up,the 2nd is far better,live and learn i guess.

Van looks great and smileys were made to be dressed in some form of cammo ...missing Transits so much i have bought an old 04 mk6 in blue to smoke about in.

yea these old Trannys should come with a Mig that's for sure but its all part of the fun...

Must add,even with the new paint you will get a slight orange peel effect,but it does flat out better than i've had/used before,and it goes over etch primer no probs,other stuff just wouldn't have it

Looks perfect mate and looks like its been bought straight from the MOD
