I've been on the Tiger at the museum. Quite in awe at the guys who had to make a living on them.Ross Leopard, a Grimsby middle-water side trawler, built by Cochranes of Selby, Yorks in 1957. One of a class of 12 sisters (Cat class) she fished continuously until the late 80's when they were converted to 150- survivor class, offshore standby vessels by Cam Shipping.
That " conversion" was painting them orange and putting 150 packets of Cup-a-Soup on board. I know because we drank them all over a cold winter..
After the Piper Alfa disaster, the gov. put the kibosh on using shagged-out old sidewinders for rescue ships, so we got her for less than scrap price.
The engine room had been dismantled and cannibalised, but I did some night-time re-cannibalisation and eventually got her going. Took a year roughly.
Rivetted steel, weight about 400 ton empty, ie no fuel or fish.
Fuel 70 ton.. lube oil 1 ton
Main engine: Ruston and Hornsby, Lincoln, VGB7XM, 200 litre, 705 HP at 1000rpm, seven cylinder, 4-valve heads turbo !! No intercooler.
Gennies, Ruston 4YE 50HP, turning Crompton Parkinson 30Kw 110v DC dynamos.
Now scrapped, but her sister the Tiger is a museum if you are near Grimsby
