Plasterboarding ceiling joints, when panels meet end on.

id plaster it but ive had some experience of doing it so i can do it

ceiling laster is alot harder to do and you wont get it right

you have to tape your edges and call it it as it goes for the middle a small mix of laster is better and fill in between the shallows then its a sand down job

but to feather in feather across the joint to the left and right on the shallows it will hide them better

I might try and get a quote, really, really, don't want to do it. So many other things to do....

@qwakers , it's all been flat, not needed the paper stuff yet. Ok with internal and external corners, only done one of each.... Yeah , don't ask ....

where are the two end joints in the above ceiling?

i did it myself and im no pro. the entire ceiling was laid out before the walls went up hence 2 end joints in such a small room.

Old walls that have had many filler repairs are notorious for it, even if you can't see or feel them, as soon as the sun hits the correct angle it looks like the surface of the moon.

Whilst we are on it, external corners, do they really use plastic now? I still use the paper backed metal strips.

that may be, but id defy you to come to my house and find the joint in ANY light.

I'd take you up on that if I were closer, I've a few tricks for that very thing.

It's just physics old boy!

If you put tape and filler on top of plasterboard, not in a tapered join it sticks up above the surface and can cast shadows.

Well, yes they are an issue, but ceiling first.

We've got 4 Ikea globes over the table, and around the edges over the surfaces 32, downlighters? You know those round led surface mounted things going in every meter. So shouldn't cast too many shadows.

Just trying to do the best job I can.

Would love to pay someone to do it. But SHMBO wants kitchen units too. And my carp and try... Well we've been there... Very mediocre....

I get the impression that the U.K. is pretty unique as far a skimming plasterboard goes - it’s normal in the US to just tape and fill the joints, followed by sanding it with a pole sander (Festool do one for megabucks). The only time I’ve tried the tape and fill method I couldn’t get the hang of it - I had to use a steel trowel to get a decent finish on the tapered edges, and the ends were lumpy. I’ve never heard of cutting the paper cover on the boards before - surely that’s a recipe for disaster, cos that’s the only thing that allows the screw heads to hold the board in place. So that’s why I would skim the whole thing!
For anyone that thinks plastering is a black art, have you tried carpet laying? I’m happy to admit that I’ve messed up more than a few rooms pretending I could do it.

Move the screws slightly further out and use more of them.

I did it when boarding up a fireplace about 8 years ago in a very old house that likes to move about.
Still perfect to this day, could do with a repaint though since the previous tenants were quite dirty.

Agree though, plaster skim is the way to go!!

Yep, I can't trim back the paper joints and run a rasp, as 'cos as you say they're full of screws. Scratch that. Good point.

Seems the norm here to fill the longitudinal joints, scrum / bandage, the joints, podge, then I sand them back and repodge where the podge has sucked in, repeat until insanity sinks in properly.

My brother.... Says you should slightly concave the spatula so when it sets it needs no sanding.... Yeah, I've seen my bro's plasterboarding, hmmm.

haven't gone metric but the spacings of joists are about 16 inch on main floors and upstairs ceilings roof spars are 22 inch spacing

Just go with the extra wide filler then! Paper joint tape is thinner but harder to use properly.
