alot of people don't when they are going into air compressors

query here what are you spraying ?

as ive seen the 90s and 100 litre air compressors able o spray a car or underbody Shultz with no problems at all
with your air bleeder one on the compressor is fine all depends on the run of tubing that you have after that to long its best to use another air/water bleeded before the gun and another length of air hose

the compressor can run I believe it to be without much problems 5/10 metre air hose without the need for another water air spliter in its line

I upcycle / restore furniture so chests of drawers, sideboards , tables etc , I hope to use paints like chalk paint (which would be thinned down) gloss paint, lacquer, sealers etc I’m hoping that the 2.2 nozzle that comes with the gun will be ok for these paints if not I know I can go up to a 2.5 I think you can get these nozzles for car painting in sizes such as 1, 1.4, 1.8 , 2 so I’m hoping if I thin the paints I use then 2.2, 2.5 will work. Seen some videos on YouTube that shows you can (so must be true ha)

Burdekin as a chief bodger wouldnt last lng in the world he works in. Its just a forum name thingy. The wolf is like many if the far eastern compressors of different colours and different names.

The paint you intend to spray will dictate the nozzle size and therefore the air consumption. I have to confess to having done some absoloutly awful spray painting, its not as easy as the pros make it look.

If your compressor is too small all that happens is the compressor cant keep up with your usage and the pressure drops till it stops atomising the paint. You stop till the pressure builds back up. Ideally you want a compressor and tank volume that is large enough so the compressor cuts in and out allowing things to cool in between.

What paint do you intend to use?

I hope to use chalk paints, emulsions, sealers, lacquer, primer I know some of these may need to be watered down a bit the gun I bought comes with 2.2 nozzle but I think you can get a 2.5 as well and hoping that will work with the above paints,

I am nervous to spend so much money and then literally make a hash of it

Nozzle size shouldnt make any difference to the air consumption as it only affects the quantity of paint that is allowed to flow. The thing that makes the difference to volume of air consumed is the ‘air’ cap on the front of the spray gun. Not sure if the sealey gun has different air caps available

Hi Chris , Now I’m even more confused but I guess I should figure these things out , so do you know if you’d require a bigger air cap to spray thicker materials.. ?.

I’m sure you I could find some data regarding sealers, lacquers etc but unlikely on chalk paints, glosses and emulsions as there usually intended to b3 hand painted or used in these little hand held sprayers which are rubbish unless your using it to spray walls or fences, I have a viscosity cup tool thing that helps you get paint to a thinner consistency other than that I may have to wing i5 an£ hope that the larger nozzles spray the paints I use, I’ve seen you tube videos people spraying furniture, kitchens etc with the hvlp guns so it must be do able , not that YouTube is 100% reliable ha

By no means a professional paint sprayer but an enthusiastic amateur. With auto paints and gravity guns it seems top coats/ lacquer use 1.3-1.4 nozzle and primers use 1.8-2.2 nozzles (may not be the same for all paints but think a good starting point).

Yes I read that in my research so my thinking was that if I can get the chalk paint consistency to the same thickness as primer the 2.2 and 2.5 should be fine, here’s hoping anyway. Think I will go for the wolf compressor and hope 90litre 12.6 cfm will be enough fingers crossed

this has done cars underbody spray in one continuous go
what is seen is all that was used for all spraying except for the spray gun

Or consider an airless spray gun for furniture. Screwfix and others sell them.

Hi Henry thanks for your (non confusing reply , man a lot of this info just gets too technical for me! I just want to spray paint with a hvlp gun and a compressor that is suitable. It won’t let me upload a picture of the gun as picture is too big but the gun is a Sealey ssg501 don’t suppose I could push my luck and ask you to look it up for me and let me know what your thoughts are regarding compressor as you seem to be clued up , not that everyone else isn’t I’ve been so grateful that anyone even responded

Good morning Sandra. If it is a HVLP gun there are mainly for automotive work. I have Devilbiss HVLP guns and with that 12cfm compressor I painted the hull of a 10meter cat three coats with urethane, the only stops was to fill the pressure pot. You won't have any problems with the compressor you are selecting. But be warned for long painting runs you "WILL" get moisture into the hoses. I use a refrigerated dryer to stop this.

Are you aware of Paint Viscosity Pots or Cups?

Test your gun on cheap paint sprayed on a scrap panel to find the viscosity and gun setting you and your gun like.
Then mix all paints to the same viscosity. Takes one of the many variables out of the equation!

I have a cheap gun that looks just like yours (from Machine Mart c. 1985 I think), a £10 eBay special small 'touch up' gun and a cheap Lidl or Aldi compressor and spray all sorts of things with all sorts of 'stuff'.

• Cheap Aldi or Lidl metal paint thinned about 10% with the cheapest thinners I can buy from the local agricultural merchant for vehicle suspension components, brackets etc, garden/garage/shed fabrications etc.
• Ancient, back of the shelf, 'might be useful one day' oil based domestic paints like Dulux and cheap thinners for various things.*
  
• Horribly expensive cellulose and equally expensive thinners on various vehicles.
• Unthinned preservative on fences and other garden equipment.
• Water based paint thinned about 5% with water for garden furniture.
• Emulsion thinned c.2% with water for painting interior of garage.
  
• Probably many more that I can't recall.

Have been known to warm Aldi/Lidl metal paint in a hot water bath to achieve desired viscosity when I only no usable thinners to hand!

Haven't tried specialised paints such as heavy textured exterior wall paints or the 'chalk' paints I think you are talking about.
Shutz gets sprayed from a special gun and I doubt that has any application for furniture.

Do lots of trials on scrap panels and good luck with your experiments.

You have been told the cost of advice on this Forum haven't you?

We will require photographs of the experiments that went horribly wrong and many more of the finished articles that went right.


*No 2 son sprayed the cam covers of his MX-5 with some red Dulux using an air brush when experimenting with a newly acquired air brush.
We assumed the paint would discolour or otherwise fail rapidly at under bonnet temperatures.
10 years ago now and still immaculate!

I think a cheap small 50 litre 3hp direct drive would be more than ok for such a small amount of usage.

Years ago I sprayed 2 cars with my tiny 25litre Clarke hobby sprayer (0.75hp!) it did just fine. It can maintain a constant 40 psi airflow at the gun, which is about right for a hvlp paintgun. Sure, the motor runs a lot doing this, but fine for 10mins as above. I've moved up now, got 2x 3hp comps with a total of 250litres, but you don't need to do this.

I'd say go for the cheapest local deal you can find, work with it to get experience, then if you want to upgrade in a year or two, sell it and buy with more confidence of what you need..

Tried that bought a Wagner one £175 so didn’t scrimp on cost I came with 2 guns a larger one and a smaller one that was meant to be for “finer detail” painting it was terrible the paint comes out too thick regardless of how much I turned the dial down for less paint to come out but the worst think about them is it gives no warning of when your paint runs out and just splutters to a stop and literally spits the last few globs of paint out and completely ruins the whole job used it twice never again..... do you want to buy one haha

Thanks for your message, was really informative and will definitely use some of your advice if I can’t get the chalk paint thinned to the right viscosity I will just continue to paint those pieces by hand but was really glad to hear that you had managed to spray emulsion (thinned) and water based paints with a gun so at least I know I will be able to use the gun and compressor for some jobs as I was a little worried that you could only use them for painting automotive materials.

Thanks for your advice, firstly I love your pictures of things I assume you’ve made, very talented, I did wonder if I could get away with the smaller tank as you say 50litre , 3hp but I think it would still need to be a high cfm one, I’m told direct drive are a lot louder than the belt ones so I think I may look for a belt one at 50 litre etc

Ah. You may be using the paint at too high a viscosity.

The viscosity cup is your friend there.

These 'chalk' paints aren't 'non-drip' meant for brush painting by any chance?

I used the viscosity cup (one came with another airless spray gun I bought off eBay came from America so I had to buy the extension lead and conversion plug from America too bloody thing blew up the minute it started spraying contacted the seller and he said it was in the “small print” that buyer pays postage to return which as it happens was more than I paid for the gun, so didn’t bother obviously, so I think I own the most expensive viscosity cup , yes the chalk paints are quite thick meant to be hand painted to get that awful shabby chic look, I personally water them down to achieve a smoother finish,
