Worth next to nothing over here, taking up space, but too good to bin....

I have around four or five scythes, and still use one from time to time, though I tend to use my little Chinese strimmer more often now. There is a real art to using one and to maintaining them. I have one with an Austrian blade that I sharpen with a stone, and the rest have thick Portuguese/Spanish blades that I peen using a jig. Everyone round here has a scythe or two. I would love an Allen scythe for hay harvest.

No problem on any slope you can stand sideways on. As long as you have secure footing you can use a scythe. I can also cut nicely around obstacles and along walls.
He is talking Allen scythes, I use a Wolseley Titan version of the same thing and it isn't brilliant to be honest. Have a 45 degree slope outside the garden on the roadside, and use it for that but it is donkey work getting it to go along the slope without slipping downwards, might be easier going up and down, but my bit is a narrow strip. Also not sure if a 4 stroke like mine would be too happy at an angle for long. Allens are two strokes so this doesn't apply to them.

i know a old boy who can remember the gardeners cutting thou lawn on the big house, they used to put wooden blocks on their feet to get the correct heigh of cut on the grass he recons they were that good, that a half a inch block of wood on a mans heels would show in the finnished lawn weather it was just a "lawn" or a entertaining lawn for playing garden games ect,
same oul boy can remember taking the ploughman fresh horses at dinner time he would have the jiggerd by lunch get a fresh set and keep going till dark!

It is easy to scythe material that cannot deflect away from the blade. Examples would be upright, thick-stemmed plants (eg nettles) or very dense crops of grass, cut off fairly close to ground level. Conversely, thin flexible stems in a sparse crop are harder for a beginner to deal with, especially if you are trying to leave more than two or three inches of stubble.
A few years ago I changed from the traditional English design with its curved snathe, and nowadays use an Austrian scythe (brand name of the blade is FUX, pronounced the way a Yorkshireman fornicates, derived from the German “fuchs” = fox). The Austrian blades and their lightweight handle design are becoming quite popular in UK. I have no experience of the Y-shaped design that is used in some parts of Scotland.
Unlike Mr Poldark, I keep my shirt on when scything. Perspiration causes little pieces of grass to stick to the skin, which can be somewhat uncomfortable - reminds me of stacking small bales of hay inside a barn.
