Portable Jump Starters

I have a cheap Wickes one... obviously marked up at the wrong price of £15 .... i would have bought the other one but someone beat me too it, It's a basic jobby for blowing up tyres and the odd jump start. It lives in the back shed permanently with a solar panel plugged in, never gave me any problems till last year when the battery was dead, i got a new one and it's been fine since. Does the job

Sounds a bargain, But I want one for the glovebox

I got an Omega Mechanix IJS8000 (one in the video is a "6000")

Rated at 700amps CCA. Paid about £90 for it when they first came out.

It is not that good - use it more for a USB power bank for my mobile phone when camping (as someone already has highlighted above).

Will turn an engine over if you have a good battery with a low charge (left lights on).

But it won't have a poor battery at all - which is what we get all the while.

It don't really like motorbike batteries much.

In a workshop - you may end up cranking for bleeding diesel up and other reasons.

I have opted for an 096 battery and jump leads.


I think the go/no go sensor circuit in these things is too fussy for real bad batteries.


You will note if you are jump starting into a poor battery - you are better to join the leads on - give in a minute with the donor vehicle running before going for the jump start.


I did have an Odyssey AGM PC680 520amp tiny little battery once - this was good and lasted about five years for jump starting.

I bought one, https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07WG1JVYJ?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_asin_title to start my racer which has a starter but doesn't have a starter battery fitted, it worked very well for five starts over a few of days, charged it up a couple of times in that period.

Sixth start it went pop and sparks emitted from the 'intelligent' leads and after that nothing at all, it was returned and refunded.

I'd had a hard time convincing myself they could be much good, but worth a go, and it seems in my case I was right.

Reckon they are alright if the only problem is a flat battery, useless for anything needing a long crank to diagnose a problem.

But a mate who works in recovery has one which gets a lot of use and he swears by it. the company he works for have a couple as well,

Funnily enough was using one of these today but it was SIP branded, same item though.

SIP, Hilta and Ring just badge engineer these things, the Hilta is exactly the same as the old Ring one. I had forgotten how good these things are, bought the new one a few weeks ago and its exactly the same as the old Ring.

I've just ordered a Banggood one which should be here in a few days. There's a new Yuasa battery fitted [and registered to the car] under their excellent 5-year warranty, after the old one failed with a few months to go.

I've been humphing an old jump starter/tyre pump/torch type around in the boot for years but it's now at the stage where it won't hold charge for any time, so I though the USB outputs for phone/tablet etc would be handy to have too. Also, if anyone needs a jump start, it'll save using the leads I also carry 'just in case' but are a bit short for practical purposes.

Device arrived today, fully charged. Seems robust with some 'heft' to it and well built, and I've only been able to confirm that the torch works in all three modes. Just need to track down someone in need of help starting now....

Cables and croc clips seem good and strong, should get a chance to test hand-held charging on the tablet and phone over the weekend. Worth £43[ish]? Aye, probably - it'll save me humphing around the old 'pack' which is on its last legs anyway.

@armalites I worked for a supplier which had quite a few GB70's I believe they were come back faulty from many customers. Not sure if it was a bad batch, But makes me doubt the quality

I have a noco gb40 a year old and its scrap. Out of 5 attempts its started 1 car.
2 weeks ago a 1.8 diesel nearly started on its own, the battery was reading 12v and it still wouldn't start with the gb40. From fully charged to 25% in about 5 tries starting her holding her for 4 seconds.
I thought I'd done my homework and bought a good one but its useless.
I've heard good reports of jumping jacks but never had one.
Even battery chargers are rubbish now. The last 2 small chargers I bought won't charge a battery if its too low. So I have to use the really old charger to bring it up a bit first before they will work.

I have chargers intelligent circuitry too, I just put another battery in parallel with the flat one and away they go. My trusty old Selmar though, I'm convinced that could revive a flat hedgehog.

Unless high end I think most of these pocket boosters are destined to disappoint,if the tech inside them was that good and cheap the car manufacturers wouldn't still be fitting big heavy batteries.I would buy one just for the phone/ipad charging capabilities and if by some miracle it started a car/machine it would be a bonus..
