Well I'm none the wiser on what to buy after reading these posts...I do like the new technology lithium ion stuff but that Hilta looked interesting....then again would be nice to have something to throw in a glove box.

£160 in Halfords if you have a trade card - about the cheapest I have been able to find. Quite tempted.....

I can tell you, and you should take notice of what I say (on this instance)

The Noco units look pretty good, one of my colleagues has one in his vehicle because he gets weird odd occasions where his car won't. He said it gets it going every time. I think his is a 70.

The 150 looks a serious bit of kit.

The one issue with the Noco units is the slow usb charging.

Just don't buy one of the cheap units, they are a waste of money. The battery cage at the local tip always has some in there.

I use an Optima yellow top 5.5, the best bit about them is you can't spill them and it means you can prop them in a engine bay with no issues. It's got an Anderson connector so can also run the winch on the trailer.

The slow charging port isn't an issue as you can charge it via a cigarette lighter socket or other external power supply, just over 2 hours from reading 8volts to fully charged whilst driving

Since my post I found there is a fast charger available but only supported on higher models.

I am very tempted by a GB150 now I know I can get a fast charger.

The gb70 also fast charges , it uses a mains to 12v charger.

I think £100 quid plus for a small battery sounds so expensive to me ,,Be a lot cheaper and probably better to just buy a Motorcycle Battery and a set of leads and keep in the boot......

We have the gb150 at work and it's excellent, started 2, 3ltr diesels with no power in the vehicle battery whatsoever and still had life in it, as long as you've got a decent 12v stable power supply with enough amperage you could just put a socket on it to use the cigarette lighter charging port

The gb150 can supt upto 4000 amps, no motorcycle battery can do that, if you need them often they are well worth the cash

If I remember rightly, it states on the box will start upto a 10 litre

I repaired a Noco GB40 for a friend, the Micro USB port was gubbed so could not be charged. I eventually found the correct type PCB mount socket and it charged okay. A clever little unit charging a 12v battery from a 5v supply! Well made but not quite so neat and tidy inside, acceptable though.

I liked the flexible leads and clips, if you look online there are a variety of different accessory cables available to plug in.

I kept it for a while to try out, regularly charging my phone and smaller USB battery packs plus jump staring a couple of cars one of which was a Freelander diesel and it coped with that okay.

We have one at work I think came from Costco, I will check what manufacturer it is later. I use it quite a bit now from testing bulbs to starting cars in preference to the Snap On jump pack. It never seems to need charging!

I was thinking about buying one but for me it would have to justify it’s existence and not just sit in the glovebox. I use my phone as a radio with a Bose speaker so it would be handy for charging those but both places I use the radio have power and internet so not really an excuse at the moment.

There are plenty of these on the interweb and they all appear to be much of a muchness - I went with BG because I've dealt with them before for other stuff and never had any problems.

They have been on the market years but were sold until recently exclusively through snap on. Old school tech but tough, simple, spares available, design hardly changed for years and loads of old ones still in use.

Suppose buying one now will seem to some like buying a Pickhill Bantam in 2001 would have done.

I've just bought a noco gb70 from halfords because all the smaller ones were out of stock. Will it be safe to use on any 12v starting battery? I have a Daytona and a 250cc husqvarna with electric start which obviously have small batteries compared with car, van or tractor. In leymans terms will they just take whatever juice they need from it or will it pump too much in and cause damage? The bikes weren't the primary reason for getting it but it would be a bonus if it'll be suitable for them too. Regards.

As I think I said before, for a pack and forget solution you really need to go for a jump starter pack that uses li-po or Li-ion batteries. The lead acid battery in that Dewalt will self discharge to an useless level over a couple months unless you remember to take it out and pop it on charge every couple of weeks. Most lithium based jump packs will still be at a level where it will start your car after even being left in the boot for a couple of years

Oddly enough, Lidl's has a reasonably cheap option coming up next Thursday ( www.lidl.co.uk/p/car-care/ultimate-speed-jump-starter-with-compressor-powerbank/p45974 ) for £59.99 that might fit the bill.

I've had a few "Ultimate speed" branded items from there, and they tend to be made to a reasonable quality for bottom end budget kit. Mind you, I haven't seen any of the pump/power pack units that I've linked to with my own eyes, so it could be a total dog. But even if it is, Lidl's has a pretty good returns policy, So you could buy it, Have a play for a few days, Then return it if it's not 100% what you're looking for.

Edit - Oh. I just noticed that your location is set to "US". If that's true, the Lidl's info probably isn't much use to you....... The lithium info definitely still applies though.
